- Active learning strategies are increasingly emphasized in health professions education, yet little is known about how the medium of group−work products—paper−based versus digital—affects learning outcomes. This study compared group−work products created by healthcare students using paper and digital tools to examine differences in content, expression, and categories of ideas. First−year students at a Health sciences university of Hokkaido participated in a required interdisciplinary course in 2016 (n=724) and 2024 (n=691). Groups created products summarizing the causes of and countermeasures for functional decline in an elderly case scenario. In 2016, products were handwritten on paper, while in 2024, they were prepared collaboratively on Google Slides. A total of 120 paper−based and 90 digital products were analyzed. Text length, number of arrows and illustrations, vocabulary diversity, and semantic categories were evaluated. Statistical comparisons were made using the Mann−Whitney U test. Digital products contained significantly more characters (Cause : 197.4 vs. 85.5 ; Countermeasures : 181.6 vs. 91.2, p<0.01) and words (41.8 vs. 18.2, p<0.01) than paper products. However, vocabulary diversity was higher in paper products (0.97 vs. 0.95, p<0.01). No significant differences were observed in the use of arrows or illustrations. Frequent words such as “exercise” and “nutrition” increased markedly in digital products, while new terms such as “screening” and “systems” appeared only in 2024. Categorization showed broader coverage in digital products, particularly in oral health and nutrition−related categories. Digital media facilitated greater information volume and collaborative participation, whereas paper media encouraged concise expression. Educators should consider both advantages when selecting instructional methods to optimize learning outcomes in healthcare education.
