-
The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is widely used to study phenomena involving granular materials and powders and to develop related facilities and processes. When using DEM, the spring constant in the contact force model is often reduced to decrease calculation time or cost. However, reducing the spring constant significantly alters the agglomeration behavior of cohesive particles. Using the technique of reducing the spring constant or elasticity requires an understanding of the physics of particle-particle interaction. This article presents a framework for applying the elasticity reduction technique to cohesive particles based on the authors’ previous studies.
