SynopsisWep ropose a definite plan for the amelioration of alkali soils which are distributed in a wide rangein the north-east China. using gypsum by-produced from desulfurization equipment such as ones in a thermalpower station. The most creative point of this plan lies in two facts. One is that in China, where dependson coal more than 70% of total energy, acid rain originating from burning coal gives serious environmentalproblems in this country. Another is that the population in China still increased that productive soilswhich are mainly distributed in flood plain gradually change to non-agricultural lands due to the invasionof industrial activities. On the other hand, alkali soils occupying more than 100,000km2 in China areabandoned as a devastated land. Gypsum is known as a prominent amending material for alkali soils bychanging a extremely hard pan of them into a desirable soil structure to accelerate desalinization fromsoil and normal plant growth.If we can reclaim alkali soils to arable ones and use gypsum produced in the process of desulfurizationof burning coal as a proper amending material of alkali soils, these difficult situations in China willbe improved. By applying gypsum materials by-produced from desulfurization equipment in Japan to alkalisoil samples taken from the north-east China, we could get some positive data supporting the ameliorationpossibilities for alkali soils.
