Summary, etc.
In December, 1977, a survey on Brucella canis infection was conducted in 315 dogs kept in 9 animal shelters and 4 medical school kennels in the Tohoku area, Japan. The agglutination test was performed by the method of the National Institute of Animal Health, Tokyo (NIAH), with antigen (NIAH) which was heat-killed Br. canis of the QE-13 strain. A titer of 1: 160 or higher was considered to be a positive reaction. As a result, 24 dogs (7.6%) were positive.
When blood culture was done by inoculating about 0.2 ml of blood sample onto tryptic soy agar (DIFCO) and incubating aerobically at 37°C for 7 days, Br. canis was isolated from 2 dogs (0.6%). There was no statistically significant difference in seropositive rate between the Pacific side (9.3%) and the Japan Sea side (4.0%) of the Tohoku area. Canine brucellosis was found to be present in all the 6 prefectures of this area.
