Note (General): We propose a new technique for measuring eectromagneric field-induced small changes in the refractive index of solids down to 10-13. It is based on a V/UV (visible to ultraviolet) interference method using an improved phase-sensitive balancing detection technique. When the technique is combined with well-developed spectral region in the radiation-source and radiation-detection technologies) as well as with electro-optic materials, it is possible to detect electromagnetic fields with high sensitivity. We have designed the measuring instrument which takes advantage of an enhanced electric field on the exciton resonance in metal halide crystals. The electric field-induced change in the refractive index associated with the exciton resonance is shown to be extremely larger than of ordinary electro-optic materials (by several orders of magnitude, as indeed demonstrated for CsPbCl3 in his work). Under the designed instrument, it may be possible to detect electromagnetic radiation down to a few tens of nW non-destructively in an extremely-wide frequency range from 102 to 1014 Hz, of course, including far-infrared to milli-wave region, with the only exception of the Reststrahlen region of the crystals.
