Note (General): 本書は、現マンチェスター大学の古典古代史学科の講師LecturerであるA. Fearが、一九九六年に刊行した共和政末期から帝政期にかけての約二世紀に渡る属州バエティカの都市化を扱った本格的な専門書である。周知の通り、属州バエティカは、他のヒスパニアニ属州(タラコネンシス、ルシタニア)に比べ、あるいは、帝国内の他の諸属州に比べ、最も「ローマ化」された地域と言われる(cf. Strabo,3.2.15)。しかしながら、ここ四半世紀の間に、スペイン・ポルトガルから考古学上の重要な発見が相次ぎ(例えば、「イルニ都市法」AE (1986),333)、「ローマ化」が最も進んでいたとされる属州バエティカ像を再考・再評価する動きが見られるようになってきた。Fearの著作は、こうした一連の流れを受けてのものである。著者は、属州バエティカを考察する際の主要史料であるストラボンや大プリニウスにこれらの碑文史料・考古学的資料を加味し、バエティカは本当に「ローマ化」されたのか、ローマはバエティカを都市化する意志を持っていたのか、それに対し土着民は抵抗したのか、という論点を本書の主軸に据え、通説を改めて問い直している。本書の構成は、序章・終章を含め、全九章から成る。具体的には、I序章、II都市化とローマ…概観、III前五〇年頃における南スペインの情勢、IVバエティカの植民市、Vカエサルからウェスパシアヌスまで…都市の地位に関する問題、VIフラウィウス自治市法…外人・ラテン人・ローマ市民、VIIバエティカの都市の遺構およびそれらの解釈、VIIIバエティカにおける非ローマ的文化形態の残存、IX終章、となっている。以下、本書の構成に従って紹介を進める。
