Note (General): Microalgae, the largest primary biomass, have been considered as a source of high-lipid material for the production of biofuels. They accumulate triacylglycerol (TAG) as a storage lipid under specific culture conditions. Especially, marine microalgae with seawater-requirement for growth have several advantages in practical application due to low land costs and free seawater, and repressing contaminant microorganisms from preferentially growing. Several microalgal strains have been selected as a promising resource that can grow as dominant species in the open ocean toward biodiesel fuel (BDF) production. However, mass production of BDF from microalgae has technical obstacles that limit development of this industry. Thus, it is crucial to reduce the cost of microalgal BDF production to realize the alternative energy production. One of the promising approaches to improve the productivity of BDFs from microalgae is the genetic manipulation technology. In this review, current situation including some issues of the BDF production from microalgae and future aspects are described.
