Yuan Xi (Li Keyi, 1920-1979) is an important figure among the new progressive writers in Beijing during the Anti-Japanese War. His novel Shell, published in 1943, won "The Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere literary award" from Japan as a representative of North China of the Republic of China in August of the same year, which triggered a dispute between the literary circles of China and Japan over the award winning of the novel. Criticism on the Chinese side can be seen in the Chinese magazines such as Guo Lin and Chinese Literature and Art, and the controversy extends to Liu Longguang, Shen Qiwu and other influential figures in the literary world of North China. However, details of the debate remain to be unclear due to lack of first-hand materials. By exploring and examining the relevant historical materials in the Japanese newspapers Tōashinpo (East Asian News) and Yenching Literature in Beijing, we can see the contemporary Japanese writers' understanding of the work itself, as well as the focus and process of the argument over this award-winning event in the Japanese literary world. In addition, by analyzing the remarks of famous domestic Japanese writers represented by Kume Masao, cultural bureaucrats in Japanese puppet government in China represented by Shichi Kakuro, and Japanese writers living in China represented by Yenching Literary Society, we can see the cognitive differences and ideological divergences about the "Literature in North China" in the Japanese literary world in the 1940s.
