本研究は、かつては共に共産圏であった旧ソ連、旧東欧諸国(特に黒海地域)のEUへの接近・統合プロセスを明らかにすることを目的に、文献研究と現地調査によって比較検討を進めたものである。特に、紛争勃発と平和構築のプロセス、未承認国家、民主化、経済発展、エネルギーポリティクスなどを中心に両地域を比較した。歴史的背景に加え、欧州への地理的な近さ、ロシアの影響力の強さなどが特に両地域の違いを生んでいることが分かった一方、旧ソ連・旧ユーゴスラヴィアに見られるような「連邦解体後」の共通問題なども明らかになった。
