本研究では、TNF-αが腎細胞癌細胞株の上皮―間葉転換(EMT)誘導により癌細胞の浸潤能を高め、癌幹細胞マーカーであるCD44発現を誘導することを明らかにした。腎細胞癌切除検体では、TNF-α、CD44発現が癌の進展・予後と相関し、分子標的薬スーテント治療後に残存している治療耐性癌細胞はTNF-α、CD44を高発現していた。以上のデータより、TNF-α/CD44経路は、腎細胞癌の増殖・浸潤・転移に重要な役割を果たすのみならず、分子標的薬に対する治療耐性に関わっていることが示唆された。
