1920年代半ばには既にドイツの画壇における地位を確立し, フランクフルト・シュテーデル美術学校の教壇に立ちながら, ナチス・ドイツによりその作品が「頽廃芸術」と位置づけられたことにより, オランダ・アムステルダムを経てアメリカに亡命したドイツ人画家マックス・ベックマンは, その亡命期に大量の作品を制作している。わけてもトリプティック(三幅対画)という, 本来はヨーロッパ美術史において祭壇画のために使用されてきた絵画形式を, 宗教的文脈から離れて作品に転用することにより, その絵画表現の地平は一気に拡大した。本研究では, アムステルダム亡命期に発表された作品群の絵画表現形式, 特に, 線描, 色彩, 空間配置といった感覚的特質に着目しつつ, 1920年代以降ドイツ絵画の主流の位置を占めた「表現主義」絵画との乖離を念頭に置きつつ, マックス・ベックマンの表現の特質と多様性に関して考察を行った。画家が制作したアムステルダム亡命期の複数の作品に関する図像学的分析作業を通じて, 画風の歴史的変遷を跡付け, またその際, オットー・ディクスをはじめとする同時代の他のドイツ人画家, さらにはフェルディナン・レジェ等の国外の芸術家がベックマンに及ぼした影響についてもあわせて検討を加えた。「トリプティック」という絵画の「形式」と作品の「内容」の連関を意図的に破壊することで生み出される緊張関係が, 画家マックス・ベックマンにおいていかなる具体的手段により実現しているかを, 亡命芸術家という特異な立場に置かれた画家の作品分析を通じて検討し, その作業を経て, 一般にドイツ「表現主義」の絵画とみなされるベックマンの作品の特質を批判的に再検討することが, 本研究が目指すべき成果であった。その成果の一端を, トリプティック作品群のなかでも最大の作品である『Blindekuh(目隠し鬼ごっこ)』(1944/45)を例として, 論文として公表した。 The paintings that Max Beckmann (1884-1950) is working on the days in his wartime exile in Amsterdam (1938-47) involve many artistic elements. As an artist of "entartete Kunst (degenerate art)", he had begun to be interested in images derived from the form of triptych. It was in that climate of political unrest that Beckmann projected the images on the triptych-canvaces. One of his triptychs, "Blindekuh" (1944/45), as an example, shows his intention of drawing as an act of representation and reinterpretation, in the disposition of colors and in the configuration of objects. Beckmann's statements in his diary, written in Amsterdam, imply his intentions and motivations that allow a clearer understanding of his art's development.
