• Note (General): type:text; 認知症をもつ人口が全世界で増加する中、子供に認知症を紹介する絵本の出版数も伸びている。本研究の目的は、特に日本で出版されたこのような絵本を分析し、欧米文化圏で出版された同様の絵本と文化的比較を行うことである。 研究の結果、いくつかの共通点と相違点が明らかになった。共通点としては、祖母と孫の関係性が物語の中心であり、それを通して、子供読者が認知症について学ぶことができるようになっていることである。特に、テクストとイメージの両面から、認知症が二人の関係性にもたらす変化が描かれる一方、二人の密接なつながりが不変でもある点が強調されるパターンは、多くの絵本の語りにみられた。主な相違点は、下記の通りであった。 （１）認知症介護の形式 介護が西欧圏以上にジェンダー化された日本の状況を反映し、日本の絵本はほぼすべて3世代世帯の家庭が舞台で、母親が介護を主に担っている例が多数であった。 （２）「自己」の概念 英語圏絵本では、祖父母が孫を認知しない出来事が衝撃的に描かれるのに対し、日本の絵本にその傾向は伺えない。日本文化では「自己」が関係性に根差して考えられると指摘する先行研究を肯定すると考えられる。 （３）子供に対する期待 英語圏絵本にみられる子供の無垢に対する理想主義は弱まり、子供が祖父母に対する思いやりを学ぶ過程に道徳教育的面が付加されることが多い。 上記の成果報告を国際学会で行った。 今後の課題として認識されたのは、絵本の数と対象年代を拡大し、日本の社会文化背景と児童文学の歴史も踏まえ、文化間の共通性と差異をより明らかにすることである。人文科学系老年学の文化的文脈は欧米圏が中心的である。比較研究により、このような偏りを是正し、老年学研究の知識を拡大することは重要である。 As population ageing progresses in many societies, there has been an increasing number of publications of picturebooks for children that are designed to introduce dementia, a condition closely associated to ageing. By conducting a cross-cultural analysis of some of these books produced in Japan and Western, and mostly English-speaking, societies, this project aims to better understand the cultural specificity that informs the understandings and imaginings of dementia in different cultures. The texts analysed commonly centralise a close relationship between a grandparent with dementia and the grandchild, and through this relationship, the books seek to inform children about dementia. These texts share a narrative that depicts changes that the condition brings to the grandparent and to the child's relationship with him/her and yet insists upon the continuity of this relationship. While these commonalities are found between Japanese and Western picturebooks, the study has also identified some differences which are considered to result from cultural conditions specific to Japan. These include: 1. The context of care for the grandparent with dementia in a multi-generational household, where a mother is a primary carer. This can be linked to the gendered and familial practise of care that is more common in Japan than in Western societies. 2. In Japanese texts, the incident of non-recognition is not featured in the same prominent way as it is in the Western counterparts. This seems to confirm the suggestion previously made that the conception of self in Japan is inherently relational and is more so than in Western cultures. 3. Children's literature is in many ways informed by adults' - and idealised, expections about childhood, as has clearly been seen in the Western texts studied in this project. In contrast, the Japanese texts seem to place a more focus on education - moral and practical - of the child, who faces the challenge of fulfilling a caring role for the grandparent. I have presented these findings at an international conference. The project has suggested the value of a study that attends to cultural specificities and may help to expand the scholarship in humanistic gerontology that is currently and mostly focused upon Anglo-European contexts. It has proven, therefore, a need for further research that would analyse a larger number of texts from a broader historical period, considering more closely the cultural and historical contexts as well as the generic features of children's picturebooks.
