- 本文の冒頭は「大日本土佐国漁師漂流記」となっており、肥前長嵜(今の長崎県)鈍通子記録となっている。内容は、四国土佐の中之濱出身の漁師万次郎等が漁の途中、暴風雨で土佐沖から遭難したところから始まる。無人島(鳥島)に漂着し、その後アメリカ捕鯨船ジョン・ホーランド号に救助され、ワフ国(ハワイ)に上陸。船長に伴われ、アメリカにわたり、琉球を経由して郷里の高知に帰郷するまでの説明文である。ジョン万次郎こと中浜万次郎は、まず摩文仁間切小渡濱(現在の大渡海岸)に上陸し、那覇里主・御物城の指示により豊見城間切翁長村に拘束され、取り調べを受けた。半年ほど琉球に留め置かれたあと、薩摩に護送され、藩主島津斉彬のもと優遇された。長崎に護送され、土佐(高知)に帰郷したのは十二年ぶりのことであった。その後幕末の江戸にて日米交渉の間に立ち、活躍した。 本書には説明文の前に鉄砲を持ったアメリカ人やアメリカの蒸気船等の彩色の絵を入れており、興味深く記述している。 仲原が著した『日本漂流奇談（昭和3年）』に「万次郎アメリカ漂流記」がある。（『仲原善忠全集』 第三巻 1978年 沖縄タイム社）<br/><br/>みんなで翻刻対象資料です。みんなで翻刻へは以下のURLから。<br><a href='https://honkoku.org/app/#/transcription/3BAE1820DC5583BC6C55F674D84D94B4/1'>https://honkoku.org/app/#/transcription/3BAE1820DC5583BC6C55F674D84D94B4/1</a>A fisherman called Manjiro from Shikoku was washed down off the Tosa to the deserted island(Tori shima). After he was rescued by an American whaling ship "Holland ", he landed on Hawai. This record chronicles the series of events he went through, being escorded by the captain of the ship, went to the United States with them. After that, he came back to his home town Kochi, via Mabuni( Itoman ) Ryukyu. "John Manjiro"or Nakahama Manjiro first landed on Odohama Mabuni magiri( village ). He was immediately transported to Tomigusuku magiri Onaga village. He was confined and investigated for six months. After that, he was transported again to Satsuma, treated well by Shimazu Nariakira, the lord of Satsuma-han(domain). He was sent to Nagasaki, and then finally came back to his hometown for the first time in 12 years. After that, he worked for the Tokugawa Shogunate during the late Edo era helped negotiations between Japan and the United States work out. This document is illustrated with interesting drawings of American soldier holidng a gun and the steam ship before the main text.
