edited by Sarah Ogilvie. The Cambridge companion to English dictionaries. Cambridge University Press; Cambridge University Press, 2020, Cambridge companions to literature. ISBN:9781108428903; 1108428908; 9781108451680; 1108451683<br>"Dictionaries and lexicography (the art and craft of dictionary-making) have existed as long as humans have been writing. When one considers that the first dictionaries were carved into clay tablets by Sumerians over 4000 years ago, then the first monolingual English dictionary, which appeared in 1604, could be considered positively 'recent'. However, the four centuries since then present a fascinating story of evolution, innovation, devotion, plagiarism, and controversy. Dictionaries are the kinds of books that are always 'just there'. Alongside religious texts they have acquired, throughout history, a sense of sacredness and authority. There are reasons for this, and this volume traces how this became so. How did a single genre of text have the power to standardize the English language across time and region, to rival the Bible in notions of authority, and to challenge our understanding of objectivity, prescription, and description?"--

The whole world in a book : dictionaries in the nineteenth century / edited by Sarah Ogilvie and Gabriella Safran

edited by Sarah Ogilvie and Gabriella Safran. The whole world in a book : dictionaries in the nineteenth century. Oxford University Press, [2020]; ©2020. ISBN:0190913193; 9780190913199<br>Nineteenth-century readers had an appetite for books so big they seemed to contain the whole world: immense novels, series of novels, encyclopaedias. Especially in Eurasia and North America, especially among the middle and upper classes, people had the space, time, and energy for very long books. More than other multi-volume nineteenth-century collections, the dictionaries, or their descendants of the same name, remain with us in the twenty-first century. Online or on paper, people still consult Oxford for British English, Webster for American, Grimm for German, Littré for French, Dahl for Russian. Even in spaces whose literary languages already had long philological and lexicographic traditions-Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Persian, Greek, Latin-the burgeoning imperialisms and nationalisms of the nineteenth century generated new dictionaries. The Whole World in a Book explores a period in which globalization, industrialization, and social mobility were changing language in unimaginable ways. Newly automated technologies and systems of communication expanded the international reach of dictionaries, while rising literacy rates, book consumption, and advertising led to their; unprecedented popularization. Dictionaries in the nineteenth century became more than dictionaries: they were battlefields between prestige languages and lower-status dialects; national icons celebrating the language and literature of the nation-state; and sites of innovative authorship where middle and lower classes, volunteers, women, colonial subjects, the deaf, and missionaries joined the ranks of educated white men in defining how people communicated and understood the world around them. In this volume, eighteen of the world's leading scholars investigate these lexicographers asking how the world within which they lived supported their projects? What did language itself mean for them? What goals did they try to accomplish in their dictionaries?

edited by Mari C. Jones and Sarah Ogilvie.. Keeping languages alive : documentation, pedagogy, and revitalization. Cambridge University Press; Cambridge University Press, 2013.. ISBN:9781107029064; 1107029066<br>"Many of the world's languages have diminishing numbers of speakers and are in danger of falling silent. Around the globe, a large body of linguists are collaborating with members of indigenous communities to keep these languages alive. Mindful that their work will be used by future speech communities to learn, teach and revitalise their languages, scholars face new challenges in the way they gather materials and in the way they present their findings. This volume discusses current efforts to record, collect and archive endangered languages in traditional and new media that will support future language learners and speakers. Chapters are written by academics working in the field of language endangerment and also by indigenous people working 'at the coalface' of language support and maintenance. Keeping Languages Alive is a must-read for researchers in language documentation, language typology and linguistic anthropology"--
