Europe's evolving role in US grand strategy : indispensable or insufferable? / Linde Desmaele

Linde Desmaele. Europe's evolving role in US grand strategy : indispensable or insufferable?. Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2024, Routledge studies in European security and strategy. ISBN:9781032424682; 9781032424699<br>"This book looks at the evolution of the role of Europe in US grand strategy, and unpacks how US administrations have instrumentalized this relationship in pursuit of extra-European objectives. The work considers geopolitical pressures in conjunction with leaders' strategic ideas to provide an account of the evolution of the role of Europe in the context of US grand strategy. Observers generally agree on the vague notion that Europe has been de-prioritized in Washington's external affairs. Against this background, the book makes the case that such de-prioritization of Europe in the context of US grand strategy also entails a reconceptualization of the transatlantic relationship, namely as a region featuring long-standing relationships that can at times be leveraged in pursuit of non-European goals. The United States has a long history of seeking European support or acquiescence for its role as the leader of the international system, but whereas during the Cold War Washington enlisted its European allies in a grand strategic struggle against a European power, more recently, it has sought to enlist European allies in extra-European struggles of different types. Thinking about the role of Europe in US grand strategy now requires new theoretical and empirical tools that allow for the recognition of this very fact. Accordingly, this book proposes that strategic ideas on the viability of international cooperation held within the White House crucially shape what - if any -- type of support the United States seeks from Europe on the global stage. In doing so, the book adds important nuance to other accounts proclaiming either the proverbial death of the transatlantic relationship or the eternal and unchanging nature thereof. This book will be of much interest to students of European security, US foreign policy, and International Relations"--

Transatlantic relations : challenge and resilience / edited by Donald E. Abelson and Stephen Brooks

edited by Donald E. Abelson and Stephen Brooks. Transatlantic relations : challenge and resilience. Routledge; Routledge, 2022; ©2022. ISBN:9780367706937; 0367706938; 9780367706944; 0367706946; 9781003147565; 9781000564440; 9781000564426<br>"This book explains how and why the transatlantic relationship has remained resilient despite persistent differences in the preferences, approaches, and policies of key member states. It covers topics ranging from the history of transatlantic relations, NATO and security issues, trade, human rights, and the cultural sinews of the relationship, to the impacts of COVID-19, climate change, think tanks, the rise of populism, public opinion, and the triangular relationship between the United States, Europe, and China. The book also conceptualizes resilience as a quality arising from myriad forms of interdependence. This interdependence helps shed light on the Atlantic partnership's capacity to withstand serious disagreements, such as those that occurred during the Reagan, George W. Bush, and Trump presidencies. With a principle focus on the US and Europe, the contributors to the volume also employ Canadian case studies to provide a unique and useful corrective. This book will interest all intermediate and senior undergraduate as well as graduate courses on relations between the US and Europe, American foreign policy, and European Union foreign policy. A specialist readership that includes academic and think tank researchers, policy practitioners, and opinion leaders will also benefit from this timely volume"--

It provides a novel interpretive framework by proposing that the three decades between 1989 and 2020 represent a distinct 'transatlantic era'. Providing a distinct new look at the recent history and politics of transatlantic relations, the book argues that three key phases can be identified

Riccardo Alcaro, John Peterson, Ettore Greco, editors.. The West and the global power shift : transatlantic relations and global governance. Palgrave Macmillan imprint is published by Springer Nature, [2016]; ©2016, Palgrave studies in European Union politics. ISBN:9781137574855; 1137574852<br>This book assesses the state of transatlantic relations in an era of emerging powers and growing interconnectedness, and discusses the limits and potential of transatlantic leadership in creating effective governance structures. The authors first resort to theory and history to understand the transatlantic relationship. They then consider the domestic and systemic factors that might set the relationship between the United States and Europe on a different path. Finally, the authors locate the potential for transatlantic leadership in the context of the global power shift. The world of the 21st-century displays different power configurations in different policy domains. This changing structure of power complicates the exercise of leadership. Leadership requires not only greater power and authority, but also persuasion, bargaining and moral suasion, all necessary strategies to build coalitions and manage conflicts between great powers.
