Alexandra Filindra. Race, rights, and rifles : the origins of the NRA and contemporary gun culture. The University of Chicago Press, 2023; ©2023, Chicago studies in American politics. ISBN:9780226828749; 0226828743; 9780226828763; 022682876X
"One-third of American adults—approximately 86 million people—own firearms. This is not just for protection or hunting. Although many associate gun-centric ideology with individualist and libertarian traditions in American political culture, Race, Rights, and Rifles shows that it rests on an equally old but different foundation. Instead, Alexandra Frilindra shows that American gun culture can be traced back to the American Revolution when republican notions of civic duty were fused with a belief in white male supremacy and a commitment to maintaining racial and gender hierarchies. Drawing on wide-ranging historical and contemporary evidence, Race, Rights, and Rifles traces how this ideology emerged during the Revolution and became embedded in America’s institutions, from state militias to the National Rifle Association (NRA). Utilizing original survey data, Filindra reveals how many White Americans —including those outside of the NRA’s direct orbit—embrace these beliefs, and as a result, they are more likely than other Americans to value gun rights over voting rights, embrace antidemocratic norms, and justify political violence"--

Firepower : how the NRA turned gun owners into a political force / Matthew J. Lacombe

Matthew J. Lacombe. Firepower : how the NRA turned gun owners into a political force. Princeton University Press, [2021]; ©2021, Princeton studies in American politics : Historical, International, and Comparative Perspectives. ISBN:9780691207445; 9780691207469; 0691207461
"Firepower explores how the NRA gradually transformed itself from a relatively small organization with close ties to the federal government and a mission dedicated to marksmanship, competitive shooting, and military preparedness to what it is today: A political juggernaut that pushes a right-wing, populist world view and enjoys a prominent position in the Republican Party coalition. As Lacombe shows, NRA members and supporters participate in politics at unusually high rates, and have for decades, successful opposing gun regulations despite the shockingly high rates of gun violence in the U.S. relative to other countries and deep, durable public support for stricter rules on gun ownership. Understanding how and why this came to be can not only teach us about the evolution of one of the most influential interest groups operating today, but can also shed light on how interest groups more generally can marshal the political behavior of their supporters over time in order to build and exercise power. Most of the work done on interest group influence focuses on behind-the-scenes tactics such as lobbying and campaign support. Yet this is not the source of the NRA's power. Instead, it is the group's ability to shape the political outlooks of its supporters on behalf of its agenda. The NRA has done this by creating a gun owner culture and social identity that mobilizes individuals to engage in various forms of political participation, and by linking gun rights to other political issues, generating a broader political ideology. Drawing on almost a century of archival data, Lacombe illuminates the NRA's identity- and ideology-building efforts in fine-grained, historical detail, ultimately showing how the group came to align with the Republican Party and considering the causes and consequences of the NRA's increasingly deep relationship with the GOP in the age of Donald Trump"--

Warped narratives : distortion in the framing of gun policy / Melissa K. Merry.

Melissa K. Merry.. Warped narratives : distortion in the framing of gun policy. University of Michigan Press, 2020.. ISBN:9780472131662
"The politics of gun policy in the United States are dramatic. Against the backdrop of daily gun violence-which claims more than 33,000 lives per year-gun control groups push for stronger regulations, while gun rights groups resist infringements upon their Second Amendment rights. To illuminate the dynamics of this polarized debate, Warped Narratives examines how and why interest groups frame the gun violence problem in particular ways and explores the implication of groups' framing choices for policymaking and politics. Melissa K. Merry argues the gun policy area is warped, and that both gun control and gun rights organizations contribute to the distortion of the issue by focusing on atypical characters and settings in their policy narratives. Gun control groups emphasize white victims, child victims, and mass shootings in suburban locales, while gun rights groups focus on self-defense shootings, highlighting threats to "law-abiding" gun owners. In reality, most gun deaths are the result of suicide, and homicides occur disproportionately in urban areas, mainly affecting racial minorities. While warping makes political sense in the short term, it may lead to negative, long-term consequences, including constraints on groups' ability to build broad-based coalitions and reduced prospects for compromise. To demonstrate warping, Merry analyzes nearly 67,000 communications by 15 national gun policy groups between 2000 and 2017 collected from blogs, emails, Facebook posts, and press releases. This book is the first to systematically assess the role of race in gun policy groups' framing and offers the most comprehensive examination to date of interest groups' framing of this issue"--

Palgrave Macmillan, [2018]; ©2018, Palgrave pivot. ISBN:9783319753126; 3319753126
This book examines the gun-related policy responses to three school shooting incidents in the United States. Gun violence prevention activists and others involved in policy making were interviewed for the book, and news media articles and policy documents were critically assessed. As a result, interpretations of the Second Amendment are shown to affect the acceptability of certain gun restrictions. News media content and policy documents, coupled with the thoughts of activists, also give an indication of why certain policy measures passed and others failed at the time of each of the case studies--back cover.

Thomas Gabor.. Confronting gun violence in America. Palgrave Macmillan, [2016]. ISBN:9783319337227; 331933722X
This book critically examines the link between guns and violence. It weighs the value of guns for self-protection against the adverse effects of gun ownership and carrying. It also analyses the role of public opinion, the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, and the firearms industry and lobby in impeding efforts to prevent gun violence. Confronting Gun Violence in America explores solutions to the gun violence problem in America, a country where 90 people die from gunshot wounds every day. The wide-range of solutions assessed include: a national gun licensing system; universal background checks; a ban on military-style weapons; better regulatory oversight of the gun industry; the use of technologies, such as the personalization of weapons; child access prevention; repealing laws that encourage violence; changing violent norms; preventing retaliatory violence; and strategies to rebuild American communities. This accessible and incisive book will be of great interest to students and researchers in criminology and sociology, as well as practitioners and policy-makers with an interest in gun ownership and violence.
