Tayfun E. Tezduyar, Kenji Takizawa. Space-time computational flow analysis : a chronological catalog of unconventional methods and first-of-its-kind solutions. Birkhäuser, [2025]; ©2025, Modeling and simulation in science, engineering & technology. ISBN:3031887263; 9783031887260
"Space-Time Computational Flow Analysis (STCFA) was developed in 1990 in the context of flows with moving boundaries and interfaces, which is a wide class of problems that includes fluid-particle interactions, fluid-structure interactions (FSI), and free-surface and multi-fluid flows. It is a computational framework made of unconventional methods, which have evolved over the years as more unconventional methods were introduced to increase its scope and accuracy. It brought first-of-its-kind solutions in many classes of problems, including fluid-particle interactions in particle-laden flows, FSI in parachute aerodynamics, flapping-wing aerodynamics of an actual locust, ventricle-valve-aorta flow analysis, and car and tire aerodynamics. With these successes in so many classes of problems, the STCFA has reached a level of remarkable sophistication, scope, and practical value. This monograph presents, for the first time, a chronological catalog of STCFA methods and solutions from their development to the present. Part I focuses on the STCFA in the context of finite element analysis, and Part II in the context of isogeometric analysis. The methods presented include complementary general-purpose methods that were introduced in the evolution of STCFA. All researchers working on or interested in space-time computations in fluid mechanics, FSI, and solid mechanics, including graduate students, will benefit from the wealth of powerful computational methods and impressive solutions they will find in the book" --

Huayi Chen, Atsushi Moriwaki. Positivity in Arakelov geometry over Adelic curves : Hilbert-Samuel formula and equidistribution theorem. Birkhäuser, [2024], Progress in mathematics ; volume 355. ISBN:9783031616679; 3031616677
This monograph presents new research on Arakelov geometry over adelic curves, a novel theory of arithmetic geometry developed by the authors. It explores positivity conditions and establishes the Hilbert-Samuel formula and the equidistribution theorem in the context of adelic curves. Connections with several classical topics in Arakelov geometry and Diophantine geometry are highlighted, such as the arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel formula, positivity of line bundles, equidistribution of small subvarieties, and theorems resembling the Bogomolov conjecture. Detailed proofs and explanations are provided to ensure the text is accessible to both graduate students and experienced researchers

Optimization of dynamical systems with impulse controls and shocks / Boris Miller, Evgeny Rubinovich

Boris Miller, Evgeny Rubinovich. Optimization of dynamical systems with impulse controls and shocks. Birkhaüser, [2024], Systems & control. ISBN:303164123X; 9783031641237
"This text explores the state-of-the-art in the rapidly developing theory of impulse control and introduces the theory of singular space-time transformations, a new method for studying shock mechanical systems. Two approaches in the theory of impulse control are presented: The first, more traditional approach defines the impulsive action as a discontinuity of phase coordinates depending on the current time, the state preceding the action, and its magnitude. The second requires the use of modern methods for describing dynamical systems - differential equations with measures. The impulse is treated as an idealization of a very short action of high magnitude, which produces an almost abrupt change of phase coordinates. The relation between these two approaches is also discussed, and several applications, both traditional and emerging, are considered. This text is intended for graduate students and researchers in control engineering and optimal control theory for dynamical systems. Readers are assumed to be familiar with the theory of ODEs, optimal control, and functional analysis, though an appendix is included that covers many of the necessary mathematical concepts." --

Hiroshi Maehara, Horst Martini. Circles, spheres and spherical geometry. Birkhäuser, [2024], Birkhäuser advanced texts Basler Lehrbücher. ISBN:9783031627750
This textbook focuses on the geometry of circles, spheres, and spherical geometry. Various classical themes are used as introductory and motivating topics. The book begins very simply for the reader in the first chapter discussing the notions of inversion and stereographic projection. Here, various classical topics and theorems such as Steiner cycles, inversion, Soddy's hexlet, stereographic projection and Poncelet's porism are discussed. The book then delves into Bend formulas and the relation of radii of circles, focusing on Steiner circles, mutually tangent four circles in the plane and other related notions. Next, some fundamental concepts of graph theory are explained. The book then proceeds to explore orthogonal-cycle representation of quadrangulations, giving detailed discussions of the Brightwell-Scheinerman theorem (an extension of the Koebe-Andreev-Thurston theorem), Newton's 13-balls-problem, Casey's theorem (an extension of Ptolemy's theorem) and its generalizations. The remainder of the book is devoted to spherical geometry including a chapter focusing on geometric probability on the sphere. The book also contains new results of the authors and insightful notes on the existing literature, bringing the reader closer to the research front. Each chapter concludes with related exercises of varying levels of difficulty. Solutions to selected exercises are provided. This book is suitable to be used as textbook for a geometry course or alternatively as basis for a seminar for both advanced undergraduate and graduate students alike

Mi-Ho Giga, Yoshikazu Giga. A basic guide to uniqueness problems for evolutional differential equations. Birkhäuser, [2023], Compact textbooks in mathematics. ISBN:9783031347955; 3031347951; 9783031347962; 303134796X
This book addresses the issue of uniqueness of a solution to a problem a very important topic in science and technology, particularly in the field of partial differential equations, where uniqueness guarantees that certain partial differential equations are sufficient to model a given phenomenon. This book is intended to be a short introduction to uniqueness questions for initial value problems. One often weakens the notion of a solution to include non-differentiable solutions. Such a solution is called a weak solution. It is easier to find a weak solution, but it is more difficult to establish its uniqueness. This book examines three very fundamental equations: ordinary differential equations, scalar conservation laws, and Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Starting from the standard Gronwall inequality, this book discusses less regular ordinary differential equations. It includes an introduction of advanced topics like the theory of maximal monotone operators as well as what is called DiPerna-Lions theory, which is still an active research area. For conservation laws, the uniqueness of entropy solution, a special (discontinuous) weak solution is explained. For Hamilton-Jacobi equations, several uniqueness results are established for a viscosity solution, a kind of a non-differentiable weak solution. The uniqueness of discontinuous viscosity solution is also discussed. A detailed proof is given for each uniqueness statement. The reader is expected to learn various fundamental ideas and techniques in mathematical analysis for partial differential equations by establishing uniqueness. No prerequisite other than simple calculus and linear algebra is necessary. For the readers convenience, a list of basic terminology is given at the end of this book
