Stephen M. Wheeler. Planning for sustainability : in the time of populism, inequality, and climate crisis. Third edition, Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2026; ©2026. ISBN:9781032763644; 9781032763668
"How can humanity sustain itself and thrive on a small planet? This challenge grows ever more urgent as the climate crisis deepens, and as right-wing populism and high levels of inequality prevent action. Planning for Sustainability presents a wide-ranging, intellectually well-grounded and accessible introduction to the concept of sustainability planning. The text explores topics such as how more livable cities and towns might be created, how greenhouse gas emissions might be curtailed, how social inequalities might be reduced, how local ecosystems can be restored, and how more sustainable forms of economic development can be brought about. More than simply a Third Edition, this book has been extensively rewritten to provide a timely rethinking of the nature of sustainability planning, issues central to it, and scales of application. There is a new focus on system change in order for other forms of progress to come about. This edition also includes expanded material on climate action, housing, social equity, capitalism, democracy, the SDGs, and the developing world. This book considers in turn each scale of planning-international, national, regional, municipal, neighborhood, and site and building-and illustrates how sustainability action at different levels interrelates. This comprehensive volume lays out a hopeful and constructive view of the future in a time of growing challenge. It will be essential reading for students of Urban Planning, Urban Development and similar fields, and practitioners"-- Provided by publisher

Jutharat Attawet, Mark Brady, Kabir Sattarshetty and Sarah Jefford. The ethical and legal implications of commercial surrogacy for healthcare : a global perspective. Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2026; ©2026, Routledge studies in the sociology of health and illness. ISBN:9781032842578; 1032842571; 9781041080107; 1041080107
"In this groundbreaking work, the authors explore the intricate interplay between commercial surrogacy and the global healthcare system, challenging conventional views with fresh insights into ethical, legal, and medical dimensions. Delving into a rapidly evolving landscape, the book reveals how commercial surrogacy transcends economic transactions to question the very core of healthcare ethics. It scrutinises international legal frameworks and exposes the delicate balance between a surrogate's autonomy and the financial pressures that can undermine it. At the heart of the discussion is the pivotal role of healthcare providers, who navigate complex ethical dilemmas while upholding the rights and well-being of surrogates, intended parents, and children. Through incisive analysis and compelling case studies, this book argues for the urgent need for robust safeguards, comprehensive guidelines, and specialised training to equip professionals for the challenges of modern surrogacy practices. This engaging narrative not only maps the evolving dynamics of commercial surrogacy but also calls for a sustainable, ethical future where healthcare remains a cornerstone of the surrogacy journey. Essential reading for researchers, advanced students, healthcare professionals, and policymakers alike, this book offers a holistic and provocative examination of an issue at the crossroads of ethics, law, and medicine." --

ISBN:9781032473109; 103247310X; 9781032473130; 1032473134
"This social history explores the lives of urban commoners in early modern Kyoto during the dramatic political shift from famine to revolution in the final decades of the Tokugawa regime, through an extensive survey of the detailed record changes from 1843 in response to these crises. The study focuses on three aspects of urban life, beginning with individual and household relations with the neighborhood communities that comprised the institutional framework of urban administration and provided financial and legal resources for residents. It then moves to the lives of ordinary people, taking a life-course approach to analyze life-cycle work: marriage, divorce, blended families, fertility, adoption, migration, mobility, and mortality. The final theme discusses households people lived in, headship succession and devolution of property; family business as a network of household shops and workshops; and the roles women played, while testing the patriarchy theories commonly used in this field and finding new explanations. Written for all levels of expertise and including many stories of everyday people, this book will appeal to undergraduate students and general readers interested in historical Kyoto"-- Provided by publisher

ISBN:9781032501369; 1032501367; 9781032501352; 1032501359
"In the fourth edition of Regulating the Lives of Women: Social Welfare Policy from Colonial Times to the Present, Abramovitz traces how the welfare state regulated the lives of women from colonial times to the present. Drawing on important feminist concepts-social reproduction, the gender division of labor, and patriarchy-Abramovitz successfully exposes the gendered and racialized myths and stereotypes built into welfare state programs. The book carefully explains the contextual conditions that contributed to the precursors of the modern welfare state, its rise and expansion after World War II, and the recent neoliberal effort to dismantle the cash assistance program most likely to lift women out of poverty. This edition marks the most extensive overhaul to date. It revises the conceptual and background chapters, discusses cash assistance programs, and considers emerging ideas such as an economic crisis theory. It also considers the future of the welfare state under the second Trump Presidency. Regulating the Lives of Women is an essential resource for all students of social work, sociology, history, political science, public policy, and gender studies"-- Provided by publisher

Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2025; ©2025, Routledge studies in the modern world economy. ISBN:9781032564173; 1032564172; 9781032564197; 1032564199
"The Economics of Russia's War in Ukraine provides a thorough analysis of the Russo-Ukrainian war, tracing its historical roots and exploring its multifaceted dimensions. This book emphasizes economic, geopolitical, and humanitarian impacts, highlighting Ukraine's resilience amid challenges. At the same time, this study examines the EU's dynamic responses to economic crises and energy transition, the consequences of the war on global trade dynamics, and the significant influence of geopolitical events on financial markets. It underscores the EU's commitment to aiding Ukraine, enhancing its security, and increasing defence spending in response to evolving geopolitical complexities. The impact of the invasion on financial markets and the vulnerabilities of the banking sector are closely examined, highlighting the complex relationship between geopolitics and the global economy. Findings suggest that the priorities for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine include addressing human capital and demographics, employment opportunities, environmental protection, infrastructure and housing reconstruction, security and mine clearance, waste recycling, agriculture and food security, digital transformation, social protection and healthcare, and education and research. This book therefore argues that a comprehensive, integrated approach with international support is crucial for Ukraine's recovery and sustainable economic growth. The Economics of Russia's War in Ukraine will be useful for scholars, students, professionals, policy makers and all those interested in the fields of economics, international relations, security, and global studies, as well as all those wishing to have a thorough and clear understanding of the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and its influence on Europe"

John Lee Candelaria. War memorialization and nation-building in twentieth-century Southeast Asia. Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2025, Routledge contemporary Southeast Asia series. ISBN:9781032893112; 9781032893143
"War Memorialization and Nation-Building in Twentieth Century Southeast Asia explores how three Southeast Asian countries- the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore-have utilized war memorialization in their nation-building efforts. Set against the backdrop of colonialism, world wars, independence struggles, and the Cold War, the book interrogates how these nations' war experiences have shaped national myths and legitimized state narratives. Examining the role of state-sponsored monuments and memorials in these countries, the author sheds light on their impact on national identity formation, state legitimacy, and citizen unity. Through these three distinct case studies, the book highlights the complexity and diversity of memorialization practices within the region, their intersections with state agendas, and the international context that backdropped the region's nation-building projects. Utilizing war monuments and memorials as its primary data source, the author explains the temporal dynamics of peace and conflict and the significance of tangible history in these nations. He critically examines the transition from heroic to victimhood narratives in war memorialization and its implications for memory cultures and societies at large. A unique study of the commemoration of war experiences in Southeast Asia, this book offers nuanced understanding of how war memories and memorialization practices have shaped, and continue to influence, Southeast Asia's political and social landscapes through the cases of the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore. It will be of interest to researchers studying Southeast Asian Studies, History, and International Relations"--

Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2025; ©2025, Routledge studies in the history of economics. ISBN:9781032807362; 1032807369; 9781032807379; 1032807377
"This book is a renovative research work on Ricardo's theory of value and of money, achieved through analysis of Ricardo's original writings, made available in Sraffa's Works. Takenaga argues that Ricardo's economic theory should be understood as a cost theory of value. He begins by re-reading the first chapter of Ricardo's Principles, focusing on the chapter's theoretical structure and definition of labour. He then extends Ricardo's characterisation of the theory of value by situating it in context of debates with other contemporary economists, namely Torrens and McCulloch. In later sections, he argues that Ricardo's theory of money is not a quantity theory, and according to him the causal relation between money's value and its quantity runs from the former to the latter. He closes the book with a discussion of Ricardo's plans to reform the English monetary regime of his time. Providing new insights into essential aspects of Ricardo's economic theory as well as into the history of economic thought, this book will appeal to economic researchers, particularly those studying the classical English economists"--

Through a series of case studies, the contributors to this volume identify the characteristics and historical transformations in the burden sharing relationships between the US and its allies. In addition to diplomatic and security concerns, they also look at the economic and financial dimensions of burden sharing and how all these elements are intertwined. They also address the different dynamics of burden sharing between the US and Western Europe -notably Germany and the UK - on the one hand, and between the US and East Asia - particularly Japan and Korea - on the other. In particular, they argue that while Western European countries provided most of the economic and political support for American policies until the 1960s, the economic support from East Asian countries became much more important from the 1970s onwards. A valuable contribution to the literature on burden sharing and strategic alliance for scholars of international relations and the diplomatic history of the Cold War"--

The chapters, contributed by experts in the field, analyze various issues in the transitional process of economic development in South Asia by focusing mainly on India's "agricultural adjustment problem" and the issues concerning industrial sectors. The book deals first with challenges related to the farmers' struggles, including traders and processors, and how they can adapt to the more sophisticated market demand for their products emerging mainly in urban areas or even abroad. It then focuses on the developments in the non-agricultural sector, introducing a global value chain (GVC) perspective. It finally analyses trends in labor migration and labor markets closely linked to the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. ISBN:9781032737362; 1032737360; 9781032737386; 1032737387
"This book examines the evolution of international criminal procedure from the 1945-1946 Nuremberg and Tokyo trials to the present period. It is largely based on a normative-jurisprudential approach to the procedural rules, comparing both norms and case-law of the relevant courts and tribunals. The work shows the possibility of classifying "International Criminal Procedure" as an autonomous concept and field of study, which is constantly evolving due to the interaction of different legal cultures that characterize this subject matter and is derived from the varied procedures as established in both statutory law and jurisprudence. Far from being an autonomous entity, international criminal procedure now represents a great compromise between the legal traditions of different ICC member States. What emerges is the historical evolution of an international criminal procedure with a unique identity, a very real "third way" between the traditional dichotomy of Common Law and Civil Law, between the Anglo-Saxon and the European Roman-Law-oriented legal traditions. The book will be of interest to academics, scholars and researchers working in the areas of International Criminal Law, Comparative Law, Criminal Procedure and Legal History, as well as judges and international legal professionals"--

Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2025, Routledge studies in the modern history of Asia ; 191. ISBN:9781032557120; 9781032557137
"Cultures of Modernity and the U.S.-Japan Cold War Alliance reconsiders the origins of postwar U.S.-Japan relations by focusing on "modernization" ideologies that the Americans and the Japanese shared in the 1940s-early 1950s. Mobilizing a wealth of English and Japanese-language sources, the author identifies parallel groups of modernist thinkers in America and Japan - including politicians, bureaucrats, intellectuals, scholars, and journalists - and follows how different strands of thought played out within an evolving political environment, forming a "middle ground." Despite their differences, both the Americans and the Japanese believed in the progressive view of history, considered Japan to be still underdeveloped, and therefore agreed on the advisability of democratizing Japan - which included constitutional reform. Whether proponents or opponents of the U.S.-Japan Cold War alliance system, they also shared the vision of Wilsonian internationalism and devised similar designs for a postwar Asian order where Japan would rejoin. Thus, by showing how the confluence of modernist cultures helped forge a postwar relationship between the two, this study contributes to the field of postwar U.S.-Japan relations by supplementing and reorienting the scope of scholarship, one that has been predominantly America-centered and framed along the line of diplomatic narratives informed by Cold War politics"--

John Bechtold. U.S. militarism and the terrain of memory : negotiating dead space. Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2025, Media, war and security. ISBN:9781032693880; 9781032693910
"This book analyses how the Iraqi city of Fallujah became registered as a setting for military heroics in American memory. In 2004, the US military conducted two disastrous assaults in Fallujah, Iraq. More than 1,000 citizens were killed, and, according to the military's own estimate, upwards of 200,000 people were displaced because of the violence. Yet, despite this human catastrophe, the kind of information that emerged in the public domain during the battle foregrounded the soldier experience in war while effacing the destruction of Iraqi bodies. This tendency to foreground the soldier body is a direct result of the military's intervention into what they conceptualize as the 'information environment'. This book draws from the second assault in Fallujah as a case study to explicate the military's investment in this perspectival space, which is both a consequence of the mediatization of contemporary war and of the need to influence knowledge considered unfavorable to military operations. In short, the military enlists the media into their targeting process to produce information that is then deployed as persuasive force to modify the beliefs of specific target populations. When the cultural texts produced by the media are remediated in the public domain after war, they can be thought of as martial constructs because they originated during war through the military's systemized attempt to influence knowledge. That is, these texts trace to a specific battlefield objective. This book reframes the notion of propaganda as a generalized public relations strategy to a more acute and coordinated attempt to decontextualize specific knowledge in the information environment. This book will be of much interest to students of media and communication studies, war studies, memory studies and International Relations"--

Delik Hudalah. Planning Indonesia's new capital city : behind Nusantara. Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2025, Routledge contemporary Southeast Asia series. ISBN:9781032868615; 9781032868622
"This book critically analyzes the hidden political dimensions associated with the planning of Indonesia's new capital. Planning Indonesia's New Capital City reveals the underlying agendas behind the Indonesian government's decisive and rapid action, under the leadership of President Jokowi, to relocate the national capital amid precarious global political and economic conditions. The central argument posits that the capital relocation is politically justified, reflecting the president's ambitions for megaprojects and, to a significant extent, the interests of his governing coalitions. The desire to establish a political legacy has emerged as a primary hidden agenda that compels state leaders and their allies to pursue the ambitious initiative of moving the capital from Jakarta to Nusantara on Kalimantan Island. As a lasting monument and symbol of modernization and prosperity, the Capital City of Nusantara (IKN) aims to reflects the enduring influence of the builder-in-chief of the world's third-largest democracy. The long-term viability of this capital city megaproject as a political legacy is contingent upon the effectiveness of formal, informal, and cultural institutional mechanisms both prior to and following the pivotal events of the 2024 presidential election and the subsequent transition of leadership. Addressing a significant gap in the literature and a timely contribution, this book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of human geography, Asian urban studies, Southeast Asian Studies and megaproject management"--

Atsushi Iida. Haiku across borders : evocative voice in second language poetry writing. Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2025; ©2025. ISBN:9781032753454; 9781032753430
"Drawing on a total of 8,308 haiku poems written by 834 English as Foreign Language (EFL) university students in Japan, this book explores the value, possibility, and potential of teaching and researching English-language haiku in second and foreign language (SFL) contexts. The book showcases how haiku is used and taught in the SFL classroom and discusses how the task of reading and writing English-language haiku promotes SFL learning. More specifically, it addresses these questions: - What are the textual features of English-language haiku produced by EFL students? - How do EFL students read and interpret English-language haiku? - What knowledge and skills do EFL students gain through the task of reading and writing English-language haiku? - What are the perceptions and attitudes of EFL students in relation to the task of reading and writing haiku in the English classroom? - How can English-language haiku be used as a research methodology? With empirical evidence from both quantitative and qualitative data, this book moves the field forward by addressing the methodological and pedagogical issues in relation to the use of poetry writing in SFL teaching and learning. The uniqueness of this book lies in its applicability and practicality both in methodological and pedagogical approaches to haiku writing that students, researchers and teachers in applied linguistics can replicate in diverse teaching contexts"--

edited by Takashi Ariga. Japanese environmental design and management for sustainable urbanism : learning from Satoyama. Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2025; ©2025, Planning, heritage and sustainability. ISBN:9781032798240; 9781032798257
"This book responds to the need to rehabilitate the holistic urban environment by introducing planning approaches which focus on the Japanese idea of "Satoyama." "Sustainable development" has become a prime concern of planning, and society is expending great efforts to achieving this end. Appreciation of cities' environmental assets has become more widely accepted and deeply taken to heart-not only by specialists, but also by citizens and communities. The balance between human settlements and the natural environment has changed. This has posed an environmental issue in that urban settlements engulf the greenbelts and water networks that help sustain the urban natural environment. Given these issues, we must consider a morphology toward creating a more sustainable urban system that regenerates the relationship between human settlements, utilizing the architectural resources within our urban fabric, and its interaction with the surrounding natural environments. This book is a guide to the theory, methodologies and practical applications of environmental design and city and regional planning of regenerative systems towards sustainable urbanism. This book also explores the socio-cultural and economic implications of sustainable urbanism, and examines urban forms, land use patterns and their built-up environments that can result from the applications. This book will appeal to a wide range of readers including researchers and students of architectural design, urban planning, heritage protection and sustainable development, but also professionals who are involved in improving the relationship of human settlements with natural resources"-- Provided by publisher

Economic history of the European energy industry : lighting up Western Europe, 19th to 21st centuries. Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2025; ©2025, Routledge explorations in economic history. ISBN:1032550341; 9781032550343
"Global climate change and the war in Ukraine have put energy back on the agenda for Europe in a way that has not been seen since the oil crisis of the 1970s. But the economics and business of supplying energy to Europe has a long and rich history going back to the nineteenth century. This book explores changes in energy markets, strategies, firms and investments during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The primary focus is on manufactured gas—the gas that was initially produced from coal distillation until new ways of manufacturing gas emerged after the Second World War. The expert contributors to this volume draw on their extensive research and utilise primary sources to explore a wide range of issues, including technological adaptation, market regulation, energy investments (particularly the role of foreign capital), gas consumption and supply issues. The case studies are particularly drawn from Spain, France and Italy, but the authors provide a comparative and global perspective to consider the wider context. The volume closes with an epilogue that brings the story into the present day to consider current issues affecting gas markets in the EU, including war, geostrategy and pipelines. This book will be of interest to readers in economic history, business history, energy history, the history of public utilities and modern European history more broadly." --
