Stephen Brooks, Donald E. Abelson, and Melissa Haussman. Understanding American politics. Third edition, University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2024]; ©2024. ISBN:1487542550; 9781487542559
"Understanding American Politics provides a unique introduction to the contemporary political landscape of the United States. Placing the study of American politics within a broader context of other western democracies, this textbook reinforces the idea that in order to understand the American system, students need to begin by understanding their own. This balanced, comparative perspective is integrated throughout to better explain and highlight the ways in which American politics and government work in relation to other democracies. Streamlined to fit easily in today's US politics courses, the third edition is fully updated and revised to engage with key issues in American politics while providing an accessible entry to the foundations of American government that detangles the polarized analysis characterizing so much information on the study of American politics. New chapters on special interest groups and the distinct American mediascape feature alongside up-to-date analysis on civil rights and inequalities incorporated in all chapters. Ultimately, this textbook enables non-American readers to understand the how and why of American politics by relating the subject to the experience and institutions of their own countries."

Ideology in Canadian municipal politics / Jack Lucas

Jack Lucas. Ideology in Canadian municipal politics. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2024]. ISBN:9781487553685; 1487553684; 9781487553692; 1487553692
"One of the most peculiar features of municipal politics in Canada is how frequently local politicians, activists, and scholars disagree about how to describe the municipal arena. For some, municipal politics is distinct from other levels of government, a world of non-ideological elections, pragmatic and technical policy-making, and issue-by-issue policy coalitions. Others argue that municipal politics is similar to politics at other scales, with persistent axes of political disagreement and a recognizable "left" and "right." This recurring debate features prominently in municipal election campaigns across Canada. In Ideology in Canadian Municipal Politics, Jack Lucas investigates municipal ideology in Canada. Using data from original surveys of municipal politicians and the Canadian public, the book reveals how municipal politics is clearly structured by left-right ideology. It shows that municipal politicians represent their constituents' ideological preferences quite well: they understand their constituents' ideological perspectives, they align with their constituents' preferences, and they are elected in part because of their ideological alignment with voters. A lively and accessible study, Ideology in Canadian Municipal Politics will appeal to readers interested in municipal politics, political ideology, and political representation." --

Remaking European political economies : financial assistance in the Euro crisis / Dennis Zagermann

Dennis Zagermann. Remaking European political economies : financial assistance in the Euro crisis. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2024]; ©2024, European Union studies. ISBN:1487549032; 9781487549039
"From 2009 to 2015, the European Union's (EU) euro area experienced an existential socio-economic crisis. To secure its institutional integrity, the EU designed several new institutions to support member states in need but also to facilitate socio-economic adjustments. The European Stability Mechanism (ESM) lies at the centre of this strategy: it provides financial assistance to member states in severe crisis on an intergovernmental basis while demanding compliance with adjustment programs from program countries. Based on a comparative political economic analysis, Remaking European Political Economies shows that the EU's financial assistance programs focused strongly on reforms that led to a partial convergence of program countries based on market-based economic governance and reduced governmental influence in the economy. The book draws on extensive, empirically based case studies of two prominent euro area countries in crisis: Greece and Ireland. Dennis Zagermann illustrates that socio-economic models in the euro area can experience institutional change if exposed to severe crises in combination with financial assistance programs that include policy conditionality. In doing so, his book sheds light on the central question of whether there is a possible convergence of European models of capitalism--a question that has been at the centre of comparative political economic debates for over thirty years."--

edited by Jennifer Sumner, Andrea Chan, Annie Luk, and Jack Quarter. Selling social : procurement, purchasing, and social enterprises. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2023]. ISBN:9781487506711; 1487506716; 9781487524500; 1487524501
"Since the 2010s, all levels of governments in Canada have gradually initiated social procurement as a policy tool to further their social values and political agendas. Social enterprises of various shapes and sizes across the country have served as partners in the execution of those agendas. Selling Social examines the experiences of these enterprises in social procurement and social purchasing. Selling Social presents the findings of a three-year Canadian research project detailing experiences of work integration social enterprises (WISEs) selling their goods and services to organizational purchasers, including governments, businesses, and non-profit organizations. Drawing on survey findings and interviews, the book explores a diverse group of social enterprises from across Canada, showcasing their successes and their challenges based on real-life examples to aid social enterprises that are considering this path. The book emphasizes the importance of including social and environmental considerations in procurement and purchasing decisions, particularly at larger scales and through public policy. In doing so, Selling Social extends the understanding of social enterprises beyond their social and economic outcomes and into the broader movement toward responsible procurement and purchasing."--

The paradox of Parliament / Jonathan Malloy

Jonathan Malloy. The paradox of Parliament. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2023]; ©2023. ISBN:148755088X; 1487550995; 9781487550882; 9781487550998
"The Paradox of Parliament provides a comprehensive analysis of all aspects of Parliament in order to explain the paradoxical expectations placed on the institution. The book argues that Parliament labours under two different "logics" of its purpose and primary role: one based on governance and decision-making and one based on representation and voice. This produces a paradox that is common to many legislatures, but Canada and Canadians particularly struggle to recognize and reconcile the competing logics. In The Paradox of Parliament Jonathan Malloy discusses the major aspects of Parliament through the lens of these two competing logics to explain the ongoing dissatisfaction with Parliament and perennial calls for parliamentary reform. It focuses on overarching analytical themes rather than exhaustive description. It emphasizes people over procedure and theory. Strong emphasis is given to dimensions of gender, race, and other forms of diversity. Arguing for a holistic and realistic understanding of Parliament that recognizes and accepts that Parliament evolves and adapts, The Paradox of Parliament puts forward an important and novel scholarly interpretation of the many facets of Parliament in Canada."

edited by Jiaying Zhao, Saugato Datta, and Dilip Soman. Cash transfers for inclusive societies : a behavioral lens. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2023]; ©2023, Behaviourally informed organizations. ISBN:1487545177; 9781487545178
"While much progress has been made in reducing poverty worldwide--especially in the pre-pandemic era--it is fair to say that an unacceptably large proportion of the world's people still live in poverty. Cash Transfers for Inclusive Societies sheds light on the widely prevalent cash transfer programs. The book asks these central questions: What is the state of the art in the development of welfare programs? What do we know works in these programs and what does not? How can an understanding of behavioral science better inform the design, delivery, and evaluation of welfare programs? The latest title in the Behaviorally Informed Organizations series, the book develops a nuanced framework for how governments, practitioners, and society in general should design cash transfer programs to improve inclusivity, reduce poverty, and improve equality. It draws on field experiments and case studies to showcase past successes, while also building frameworks and developing prescriptive advice that we can give to practitioners who are looking to design a behaviorally informed cash transfer program. With contributions from leading academics as well as seasoned practitioners, Cash Transfers for Inclusive Societies presents a new model to policymakers to study and shift the discourse on poverty alleviation from purely economic factors to also behavioral ones."

edited by Pablo Heidrich and Laura Macdonald. Canada's past and future in Latin America. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2022]; ©2022. ISBN:9781487540425; 9781487540432
"Many historians and political scientists argue that ties between Canada and Latin America have been weak and intermittent because of lack of mutual interest and common objectives. Has this record of diverging paths changed as Canada has attempted to expand its economic and diplomatic ties with the region? Has Canada become an imperialist power? Canada's Past and Future in Latin America investigates the historical origins and more recent developments in Canadian foreign policy in the region. It offers a detailed evaluation of the Harper and Trudeau governments' approaches to Latin America, touching on political diplomacy, bilateral development cooperation, and civil society initiatives. Leading scholars of Canada-Latin America relations offer insights from unique perspectives on a range of issues such as the impact of Canadian mining investment, security relations, democracy promotion, and the changing nature of Latin American migration to Canada. Drawing on archival research, field interviews, and primary sources, Canada's Past and Future in Latin America advances our understanding of Canadian engagement with the region and evaluates options for building stronger ties in the future."--

Samuel Clowes Huneke. States of liberation : gay men between dictatorship and democracy in Cold War Germany. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2022]; ©2022, German and European studies ; 44. ISBN:9781487542146; 9781487542108
"States of Liberation traces the paths of gay men in East and West Germany from the violent aftermath of World War II to the thundering nightclubs of present-day Berlin. In this groundbreaking account of male homosexuality in Cold War Germany, Samuel Clowes Huneke uncovers how the history of gay persecution and liberation continues to shape life in reunified Germany today. Following a captivating cast of characters, from gay spies and Nazi scientists to queer politicians and secret police bureaucrats, States of Liberation tells the remarkable story of how the two German states persecuted gay men--and how those men slowly, over the course of decades, won new rights and created new opportunities for themselves in the heart of Cold War Europe. Relying on untapped archives in Germany and the United States as well as oral histories with witnesses and survivors, Huneke reveals that communist East Germany was in many ways far more progressive on queer issues than democratic West Germany. States of Liberation fundamentally argues for a more nuanced understanding of gay liberation and its relationship to democracy and dictatorship in the modern world."--

Alan Siaroff. Comparing political regimes : a thematic introduction to comparative politics. Fourth edition, University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2022]; ©2022. ISBN:9781487507770; 1487507771; 1487525362; 9781487525361
"Comparing Political Regimes provides a current and comprehensive empirical assessment of the world's 195 sovereign states. Alan Siaroff analyses and classifies countries in terms of economic development, political evolution, and state strength, ultimately outlining and contrasting the aspects of four regime types: liberal democracies, electoral democracies, semi-open autocracies, and closed autocracies. The fourth edition explains institutional differences within democracies and autocracies respectively, including how regimes evolve in key countries and how this change is incremental. An invaluable reference for students to refer to, this book provides a thorough foundational introduction to the comparative politics of countries and contains several unique figures and tables on the world's sovereign states. This new edition modifies the conceptual focus regarding some features of democracy and democratic party systems, expands on variations in autocracies, and adds a new chapter on the historical evolution of democracy, including key thresholds of representative democracy and levels of participation and competition at various historical junctures for all countries."--

Fifth edition, University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2022]; ©2022. ISBN:1487506198; 9781487506193; 1487524161; 9781487524166
"Thinking Government examines the key roles and duties of the Canadian federal government and its public service, and the policy and program debates that revolve around these roles and duties. The fifth edition of this textbook provides students with a core awareness of major issues shaping federal policies and programs--socio-economic policy options, French-English relations, regionalism and regional policy, Canadian-American relations, immigration, environmental policy, and Indigenous relations. This book takes a close look at how prime ministers and cabinet ministers interact and addresses issues in federal, financial, and human resources management, ethics and accountability, and leadership. The new edition is revised and updated throughout and addresses the 2021 federal election and the latest Trudeau minority government as well as the federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This book aims to help its readers to be smart citizens and knowledgeable critics of what governments do well, what they could be doing better, and why they, at times, fail to deliver effective policies and programs."--

translated by Alexander Dalzell with Ann Dalzell and John N. Grant; annotated by James M. Estes. The correspondence of Erasmus : letters 2940 to 3141, June 1534-February 1537. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2022]; ©2022, Collected works of Erasmus ; volume 21. ISBN:9781487507664; 1487507666; 9781487536695; 1487536690
This volume comprises Erasmus' correspondence during the final two years of his life, June 1534-August 1536. In the public sphere it was a time of dramatic events: the reconquest of the duchy Wurttemberg from its Austrian occupiers; the siege and destruction of the Anabaptist "kingdom" at Munster; Charles V's great victory at Tunis; and the resumption of the Habsburg-Valois wars in Italy. In the private sphere, these were years of deteriorating health, thoughts of impending death, and the loss of close friends (including Thomas Fisher and Thomas More, both executed by Henry VIII). At the same time, however, Erasmus managed to publish his longest book, Ecclesiastes, and to make arrangements, in his final will, for his considerable wealth to be spent for charitable purposes after his death.
David E. Smith, Christopher McCreery, and Jonathan Shanks; foreword by the Right Honourable David Johnston and Stephen Wallace. Canada's deep Crown : beyond Elizabeth II, the Crown's continuing Canadian complexion. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2022]; ©2022. ISBN:9781487540753; 1487540752; 9781487540760; 1487540760
"The Crown in Canada has had a profound influence in shaping a country and a constitution that embraces the promotion of political moderation, societal accommodation, adaptable constitutional structures, and pluralistic governing practices. While none of these features themselves originated through legislative or constitutional action, David E. Smith, Christopher McCreery, and Jonathan Shanks propose that all reflect the presence and actions of the Crown. Examining how constitutional monarchy functions, Canada's Deep Crown discusses how the legal and institutional abstraction of the Crown varies depending on the circumstances and the context in which it is found. The Crown presents differently depending on who is observing it, who is representing it, and what role it is performing. With a focus on the changes that have taken place over the last fifty years, this book addresses the role of the Crown in dispersing power throughout Canada's system of government, the function the Sovereign, governor general, and lieutenant governors play, and how the demise of the Crown and transition to a new Sovereign is likely to unfold."--

B. Timothy Heinmiller and Matthew A. Hennigar. Aiming to explain : theories of policy change and Canadian gun control. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2022]. ISBN:9781487542320; 1487542321; 9781487542337; 148754233X; 9781487542344
"Firearms policy has periodically dominated Canadian politics since the late 1960s. Compared to the United States, however, there is little scholarship on firearms policy to the neighbouring north. Using Canadian firearms policy, Aiming to Explain examines five prominent policy process theories employed during the period starting from the 1989 Montreal Massacre to the 2012 cancellation of the universal firearms registry. Throughout, B. Timothy Heinmiller and Matthew A. Hennigar present rigorous applications of rational choice institutionalism, social constructivism, the advocacy coalition framework, the multiple streams framework, and punctuated equilibrium. The investigations draw on method-based best practices, while also making use of a wide range of data collection and analysis techniques including inferential statistics, descriptive statistics, process tracing, congruence analysis, and qualitative content analysis. The goal of Aiming to Explain is not to select a single best theory, but to compare their relative strengths and weaknesses in an effort to direct future research and theoretical development efforts in the study of Canadian public policy."--

edited by Jan Bloemendal. Controversies. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2022]; ©2022, Collected works of Erasmus ; volume 74. ISBN:9781487546298
Erasmus' thorough engagement with the New Testament, in particular his revision of the Vulgate translation, aroused much controversy, especially in the orthodox Roman Catholic country of Spain. Erasmus had to fight fierce polemics with several people, including two Spanish scholars, Diego López Zúñiga and Sancho Carranza de Miranda, who were both connected to the University of Alcalà. This quarrel lasted from 1520 to 1524, with a late response by Erasmus in 1529. The discussion started as a philological one, regarding "correct" Latin, but turned into a dogmatic-theological fight over the issues of whether the New Testament speaks of Christ as God, whether one can apply the term servus (servant) to Christ, and whether the sacramental character of matrimony can be deduced from Ephesians 5:32. The five texts in this volume are, for the first time, translated and annotated. With elucidating notes and an introduction, the volume offers wonderful insight into a fierce and fundamental polemic over the New Testament.

Katherine Bowers. Writing fear : Russian realism and the gothic. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2022]; ©2022. ISBN:9781487526924; 148752692X
"In Russia, gothic fiction is often seen as an aside--a literary curiosity that experienced a brief heyday and then disappeared. In fact, its legacy is much more enduring, persisting within later Russian literary movements. Writing Fear explores Russian literatures engagement with the gothic by analysing the practices of borrowing and adaptation. Katherine Bowers shows how these practices shaped literary realism from its romantic beginnings through the big novels of the 1860s and 1870s to its transformation during the modernist period. Bowers traces the development of gothic realism with an emphasis on the affective power of fear. She then investigates the hybrid genres function in a series of case studies focused on literary texts that address social and political issues such as urban life, the woman question, revolutionary terrorism, and the decline of the family. By mapping the myriad ways political and cultural anxiety take shape via the gothic mode in the age of realism, Writing Fear challenges the conventional literary history of nineteenth-century Russia."--

Patrick O'Neill. Finnegans wakes : tales of translation. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2022]; ©2022. ISBN:9781487541996; 1487541996
"James Joyce's astonishing final text, Finnegans Wake (1939), is universally acknowledged to be entirely untranslatable. And yet, no fewer than fifteen complete renderings of the 628-page text exist to date, in twelve different languages altogether--and at least ten further complete renderings have been announced as underway for publication in the early 2020s, in nine different languages. Finnegans Wakes delineates, for the first time in any language, the international history of these renderings and discusses the multiple issues faced by translators. The book also comments on partial and fragmentary renderings from some thirty languages altogether, including such perhaps unexpected languages as Galician, Guarani, Chinese, Korean, Turkish, and Irish, not to mention Latin and Ancient Egyptian. Excerpts from individual renderings are analysed in detail, together with brief biographical notes on numerous individual translators. Chronicling renderings spanning multiple decades, Finnegans Wakes illustrates the capacity of Joyce's final text to generate an inexhaustible multiplicity of possible meanings among the ever-increasing number of its impossible translations."--

edited by Esther Fernández and Adrienne L. Martín. Drawing the curtain : Cervantes's theatrical revelations. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2022]; ©2022, Toronto Iberic ; 78. ISBN:9781487508777; 1487508778
"Miguel de Cervantes's experimentation with theatricality is frequently tied to the notion of revelation and disclosure of hidden truths. Drawing the Curtain showcases the elements of theatricality that characterize Cervantes's prose and analyses the ways in which he uses theatricality in his own literary production. Bringing together the works of well-known scholars who draw from a variety of disciplines and theoretical approaches, this collection demonstrates how Cervantes exploits revelation and disclosure to create dynamic dramatic moments that surprise and engage observers and readers. Hewing closely to Peter Brook's notion of the bare or empty stage, Esther Fernández and Adrienne L. Martín argue that Cervantes's omnipresent concern with theatricality manifests not only in his drama but also in the myriad metatheatrical instances dispersed throughout his prose works. In doing so, Drawing the Curtain sheds light on the ways in which Cervantes forces his readers to engage with themes that are central to his life and works, including love, freedom, truth, confinement, and otherness."--

Jeanette L. Patterson. Making the Bible French : the Bible historiale and the medieval lay reader. University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press; University of Toronto Press, [2022]. ISBN:9781487508883; 1487508883
"From the end of the thirteenth to the first decades of the sixteenth century, Guyart des Moulins's Bible historiale was the predominant French translation of the Bible. Enhancing his translation with techniques borrowed from scholastic study, vernacular preaching, and secular fiction, Guyart produced one of the most popular, most widely copied French-language texts of the later Middle Ages. Making the Bible French investigates how Guyart's first-person authorial voice narrates translation choices in terms of anticipated reader reactions and frames the biblical text as an object of dialogue with his readers. It examines the translator's narrative strategies to aid readers' visualization of biblical stories, to encourage their identification with its characters, and to practice patient, self-reflexive reading. Finally, it traces how the Bible historiale manuscript tradition adapts and individualizes the Bible for each new intended reader, defying modern print-based and text-centred ideas about the Bible, canonicity, and translation."
