Bentonite-sand mixture will be used as a shielding material in a disposal facility for radioactive waste generated at a nuclear power plant, because of the low permeability of smectite in bentonite. Bentonite must be homogeneously mixed in the mixture. This study examined the use of methylene blue adsorption as a method to confirm the homogeneity of the bentonite content in the mixture. This is because methylene blue is adsorbed on bentonite in large quantities, and the amount of methylene blue adsorbed on the mixture should represent the amount of bentonite in the mixture.

The amount of bentonite and sand was determined as the ratio of the bentonite and the sand was 3 : 7 by dry weight. 2.5 to 3 kg of bentonite-sand mixtures was prepared by mixing with an Eirich mixer. The methylene blue adsorption of the mixtures was determined by modifying part of the colorimetric method of JIS Z 2451 (2019), because JIS Z 2451 (2019) is a method for bentonite alone. In the measurement of the mixtures, the amount of the samples was 10 or 20 times the amount specified by JIS Z 2451 (2019). The amount of sodium diphosphate solution to disperse the sample and the amount of methylene blue solution added to the sample dispersions were also increased to match the amount of the sample. Using the measured methylene blue (MB) adsorption of the mixtures, the bentonite content in the mixtures was calculated using the following formula.

The calculated bentonite content was within the range of 30±2% for all samples. This result is consistent with that the mixtures were prepared to be 3 : 7 bentonite and sand by dry weight. The presence of bentonite in the prepared mixtures at a ratio of 30±2% was confirmed by the amount of methylene blue adsorbed. In actual radioactive waste disposal projects, the amount of bentonite in the mixture can be confirmed by measuring the amount of methylene blue adsorption, which may indicate the homogeneity of the mixture.
