- A survey on biting flies feeding on cattle was conducted in a pasture at the foot of Mt. Sambe in Shimane prefecture. In it, biting flies were collected from selected cattle by the scooping method over a period from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. They were classified into 19 species of 4 genera.<BR>Biting flies appeared continually from the end of April to the beginning of October, or most frequently in the middle of August, when 566 of them were collected over the 12-hour period. They were seen most frequently from 1 to 2 p.m. during the day few of them were observed on rainy days. There was a significant difference at 1% level in the frequency of appearance of biting flies between the fine days and the cloudy ones.<BR>Of the biting flies collected, the following species were most prevalent, as listed in the decreasing order:<I>Atylotus bivittateinus, Tabanus trigeminits, T. kinoshitai, A. horvathi, T. fulvimedioides, T. trigonus, T. refidens, and T. chrysyrus.</I>
