Soft-shelled turtles from the Lower Miocene Kunimi Formation, Fukui Prefecture, Japan

Partial shell materials of large (carapace up to 70 cm long as estimated) trionychid turtles( Family Trionychidae, Order Testudines, Class Reptilia) are reported from the Lower Miocene( 18 to 16 Ma) Kunimi Formation of Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture, Central Japan, are characterized by unique fine sculptures of the plastron, identified as Rafetus sp. They were found from shallow marine beds, tidal shoreface sediments. This occurrence suggests they originally inhabited shallow marine environments. Smaller trionychid, with about only 30 cm long carapace, was found from the fluvial sediment of the Kunimi Formation. These trionychids seem to demonstrate both morphological and paleoecological diversities during the Early Miocene turtles in Japan.
