Disaster mitigation and prevention have been major concerns. The key issue of the disaster prevention system is the safety of residential settlements in urban environment. Creating proper open space system is a very effective approach against earthquake disaster. This research focuses open spaces system of the residential environment. Based on survey observations of the outdoor spatial arrangement and details of environment, we developed a computer program to automatically evaluate the open spaces, which indicates the earthquake vulnerabilities in different types of area under different damage situation.
