This paper presents the results of a small survey concerning international students’perceptions of their academic and non-academic experiences at Shiga University’s Faculty ofEconomics in Japan. It explores the general issues that face international students and considersseveral dimensions, such as the students’ reasons for studying in Japan, university assistance, financial issues, Japanese language ability, classroom experience, accommodation issues, parttimeemployment, and friendships. The results of the survey conclude that the academicexperiences of the students highlight deficiencies in the Japanese higher education systemconcerning international students, such as inadequate academic language course provision;whereas the students’ non-academic experiences raise the wider issues of accommodation, cultural adjustment and the cost of living in Japan.
