This paper examines a Taiwan issue in U.S.-China relations. Scholars have devoted their attention to the possibility that military conflicts would erupt in the Taiwan Strait between China and Taiwan backed by the United States. This paper, however, focuses on the fact that there has not been a major military conflict in the Strait since Taiwan was separated from the mainland’s control in 1949-50. Chapter 1 argues that the American de-facto two-China policy greatly contributed to the relative stability of the Strait in the period when the United States and China were rivals in Asia. Chapter 2 focuses on the fact that the United States and China didn’t reach an agreement over the Taiwan issue in spite of their accommodation in the 1970s. Chapter 3 points out that from the 1990s to the beginning of the 21st century the United States and China come to view an independent movement in Taiwan as a common target to be contained.
