一般注記: This study examines the influence of import tariff policies on welfare in a two-country model with heterogeneous firms and variable markups.In this model,the market outcome under free trade provides too small (large) output level for more (less) productive firms and too many varieties due to markup pricing, which can be partially compensated by import tariffs. If countries cooperatively adopt a symmetric import tariff, the efficient tariff that maximizes the total welfare level of the two countries is positive when the introduction of the small symmetric import tariff sufficiently improves this within-sector misallocation.
