一般注記Background: Denture adhesive is widely used in elderly person who wearied complete dentures. Chinse herbal medicine have been used for treatment of oral disease for long time. We guessed that combination of herbal medicine to the denture adhesive is possible to develop the denture adhesive which effective for xerostomia patients. Purpose: To investigate the effects of herbal medicine components on physical properties of denture adhesive. Methods: We used combination of 35 wt% PVM-MA, 20 wt% CMC, 40 wt% white petrolatum, and 5 wt% liquid paraffin as base materials. Three kinds herbal medicine components; Maimendong (Ophiopogon), Fuling (Hoelen), and Dongkuizi (Cluster mallow seed) was added to base materials with 1wt%, 5wt% and 10wt%. The initial viscosity was measured using a controlled-stress rheometer (AR-G2). The adhesive strength was measured according to the ISO-10873 recommended procedures. All data were analyzed independently by one-way ANOVA combined with a Turkey’s multiple comparison test at 5% level of significance. Results: Significant differences were observed between materials in initial viscosity (p <0.05). Specifically, samples containing 5wt% and 10wt% of Maimendong showed higher values compared with the control samples. Larger amounts of herbal medicine components are associated with greater changes in the adhesive strength of denture adhesives over time. And the denture adhesives containing herbal medicine components does not have cytotoxic and safe for use in actual clinical practice. Conclusion: From limitation of this study, our results suggest that it may be feasible to develop cream-form denture adhesives containing herbal medicines that possess therapeutic effects against xerostomia.
