It is very remarkable that Rome has retained its great walls which were constructed in the third century and were called as "Aurelian Walls", while many European cities lost their walls in the course of modernization. The Aurelian Walls of Rome have been repeatedly repaired and recognized as "City Wall s of Rome" up to the present. Here the importance of City Walls of Rome in the middle ages is made clear as follows: in the medieval Rome, on the one hand, outside the walls there were many great Christian sanctuaries which many pilgrims visited, so Rome could not be imagined without those surrounding areas. On the other hand, there were pastures and fields in the walls, so the habitation didn't cover all over the inside walls, that means the walls didn't function as the boundaries of the very city . Furthermore the walls were not so useful in the actual wars. But its dignified appearance had deterrent effects to the enemies and it was the most manifest entity that impressed the Imperial Rome.
