Computer simulations of paint color formation may be applied to developing graphics software that can reproduce the paint colors. In the “glazing" technique in the classical oil painting, one or more thin transparent layers of paints are applied to an opaque layer to create delicate color tones that cannot be achieved by color mixture. This thesis simulates the coloring of the glaze technique on computers from an optical aspect, and discusses its potential application. The paints based on oils have essential transparency in contrast to paints based on others. This characteristic transparency of the oils is crucial to the glazing technique. Some kinds of transparencies can be represented by two-dimensional graphics software used widely at present, which allows users to specify, for each layer, a degree of transparencies and an operation method for merging the layer into its underlying layers. However, an operation method based on subtractive color mixing fails to reproduce colors of the actual layers of paints. In existing two-dimensional graphics software, greater transparency of a layer just leads to a lighter color, ignoring the characteristic transparency in the colors of oils. A glazing technique simulated on a computer may enable graphics software to realize such layered colors as in the classic oil painting. In this thesis, the simulations of the glaze technique are done in two approaches. The first approach is based on the 2-flux model, which is used also in existing computer graphics research and computer color matching. This model includes propagation of light only in directions perpendicular to the layers, to simplify scattering and absorption of the light. Since scattering is taken into account, mixed and layered colors closer to those on actual paintings can be calculated. The simplification to one-dimensional propagation of light significantly reduces computational complexity. In this thesis, a simulation of the glazing based on a standard 2-flux model is performed, and compared with colorimetry for actually prepared paint samples, to examine the model. The second approach is based on the radiative transfer equation, which describes propagation of light in a three-dimensional space by incorporating the effect of light attenuated by absorption and scattering and the effect of light scattered to the main propagation direction from other directions, allowing treatment of dependence on directions such as the incidence angle and the observation angle of light in contrast to the 2-flux model. One way to solve this equation is the auxiliary function method based on conversion of the radiative transfer equation represented by an integro-differential equation into a linear integral equation. As advantages, this method is free from such problems as discretization of the angular variables and capable of continuously changing the absorption coefficient and the scattering coefficient in the layers. However, its precision depends on how to solve the linear integral equation numerically, and thus the cost of calculating coefficients of simultaneous linear equations in discretizing the linear integral equation increases with precision. Therefore, recalculation of spectral reflectance after changing parameters consumes time. This problem should slow down color adjustment for layered paints in simulating colors of the glazing, and hinder development of graphics software. In this thesis, an efficient algorithm for numerical calculation in the auxiliary function method is proposed to accelerate the glazing simulations. Finally, utilizing the results of the simulations, a preliminary application is provided on a tablet computer having an accelerometer. Colors changing according to the incidence angle are reproduced on a display by intuitive operations. This thesis consists of five chapters: In chapter 1, the importance of investigating the pictorial approach in the computer graphics is described, and the purpose of this study is provided. In chapter 2, characteristics of oil paints and techniques of oil painting, especially the glazing technique, are described from an artistic aspect. In chapter 3,the glaze technique is simulated by the 2-flux model, and the results of the experiment are described. In chapter 4, the glaze technique is simulated by the radiative transfer equation, andimprovement of algorithms to accelerate the simulations is discussed. In addition, a numerical experiment is performed and its results are presented. Furthermore, an interface for displaying the results is discussed, and a system made as the preliminary application is described. In chapter 5, conclusions, summaries and possible future developments are described.
