- 要約等
- The book of sound and meaning is a kind of traditional study on linguistic documents with phonetic annotation for Buddhist scriptures, its objects are mostly Buddhist classics (internal classics) and Confucian classics (external classics). The sound and meaning of Buddhist scriptures first appeared in the Wei and Jin Dynasties, flourished in the Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties, and spread to Japan very early. In the Nara period of Japan (710-794), in order to interpret Buddhist scriptures, Japanese monks imitated the sound and meaning of traditional Buddhist scriptures in China and compiled many Japanese Buddhist scriptures. Among them, Ogawaʼs Notes of Sound and Meaning of Retranslated Avatamsaka Sutra was written at the late Nara era in Japan, which is the oldest existing sound and meaning of Buddhist Scripture in Japan. When interpreting the words, phrases, and sentences in the Retranslation of Avatamsaka Sutra, the Japanese monk cited Notes of Sound and Meaning of Retranslated Avatamsaka Sutra (written by Hui Yuan) and the New Notes of Sound and Meaning of the Avatamsaka Sutra Scripture (written by the Japanese monk), Yiqiejing Yinyi( written by Xuan Ying), Yu Pian(written by Guye Wang), Zi Yang books and other materials. In these books, there are not only the early handwritten versions of handed down words books, but also the precious versions that have been lost for a long time, which have high value of literature collation. This article analyzes the layout of Ogawaʼs Notes of Sound and Meaning of Retranslated Avatamsaka Sutra, and found that part of this book may have been completed during expound Buddhist sutras . It seems to be different from the writing process of Chinese traditional sound and meaning of Buddhist scriptures. The above findings can provide necessary empirical evidence for the research on the origin and process of the sound and meaning of early Japanese Buddhist scriptures, and it is also helpful to understand Japanese monksʼ learning attitude and excerpting habits of Chinese classics.
