- The study aimed to investigate the influence of workbooks on junior college students’ self-regulated learning and the relationship between cognitive strategy and self-regulated learning. We subjected 24 junior college students enrolled in a physical education class (22 female students: Mage = 21.38, SDage = 7.86) to an intervention program with three different content workbooks. Workbooks comprises three contents: a) self-evaluation; b) goal setting and self-evaluation; and c) goal setting, self-monitoring, and self-evaluation. This physical education class was provided 15 times, and the intervention was conducted for five periods each. Junior college students completed a questionnaire on self-regulated learning strategies and self-efficacy related to physical education classes. Cluster analysis revealed that junior college students could be classified into three types of cognitive strategy: “pessimism,” “defensive pessimism,” and “optimism.” Repeated measures analysis of variance revealed that self-efficacy was higher in the defensive pessimism group than in the pessimism group. Goal-setting scores improved through the goal-setting and self-evaluation workbook. Consequently, we discuss the intervention of self-regulated learning in physical education classes.
