The main Thai poster designers’ problem is a lack of creating Thai characteristic identity for communicating to contemporary Thai and international society, and this study aims to investigate Thai cultural characteristics and communication techniques which can be shared with a contemporary and international poster design approach. After the examination of posters, collected mostly in Bangkok, Thailand, in the years of 2010-2013, the author found several similarities among these posters and there are many features, which could be related to social response topics. The study starts with the analysis of current situations of Thai contemporary poster designs with various designers, which demonstrate the current Thai approaches of poster designs. Then, both the international and Japanese posters are reviewed as to find similarities and differences in characteristics and expressions. In addition, there is a study of the artistic values that reveals Japanese expression in general. Analyzing Japanese and International posters, the results of characteristics and techniques are applied to the case studies. In order to testify the characters and expression techniques by descriptive research, a series of case studies is set as a design experiment. These case studies are done to apply the characteristics and expression, which resulted from analysis, for social poster design competitions. Furthermore, their process is set to develop a clear understanding and a progress of applying the characters and expression techniques in Thai poster design. The final poster design study is also included in this research is as to affirm the result of practices, which concludes the entire process of applying the characters and expression techniques in the poster design. The final work is sent to testify in international competitions. The comments and results of final design and practices are evaluated in relation to social responses and artistic values.
The main purpose of this study is to give an example of a poster design process that can be shared or applied by different cultures for changing commercial poster design toward poster art and response to community.
