Self-compassion refers to the state of being aware of one's own suffering, responding with empathy, and holding a desire to alleviate it. Mindfulness is an attitude of accepting present experiences as they are and observing oneself with a balanced perspective. These are important qualities in helping professions and are recommended for cultivation. This study compared a clinical psychology seminar class designed to increase self-compassion with an introductory clinical psychology lecture-based course, to examine changes in students' self-compassion and mindfulness before and after the courses. Results from a two-way mixed ANOVA indicated that the seminar group, which focused on self-compassion, showed a significantly greater increase in self-compassion compared to the lecture-based group. In contrast, mindfulness scores did not change significantly in either group. This suggests that while experiential learning in the form of a seminar is effective in cultivating self-compassion and a common humanity, mindfulness attitudes are difficult to change through limited in-class learning.
