How do events in video games relate to player's reaction time and attractiveness?

Purpose of our research is to identify game player's behavioral traits which reflect attractiveness of the game and to utilize them for measuring and controlling the attractiveness. Our experiments using a kind of slot machine indicated that outcome of the last trial has an influence on a latency of player's button pressing response and that the effect changes depending on the amount and frequency of the rewarding outcomes. For exploring these relations between the game attractiveness and player's reaction, in this study, we developed a new video game program, and attempted to collect elementary data. In the experiment, on a PC display, a random wave line moves from right to left, and player's icon moves up and down according to the height of the line at the center of the display. Participants can click a button at any time they want. The click stops the line and the icon vibrates for 1 s. After that, sometimes the participant gains some points (win), influencing the payments after the experiment. After playing this game for 30 minutes, participants completed a questionnaire asking about their strategies for win. Wave of the line was made by a noise function, and win or loss of each response was determined by a VI schedule. Although points gained by one win varied randomly, degree of the variability changed according to ABA (small-large-small) design. Addition to the basic behavioral information of the play (response rates, reinforcement rates, and so on), we analyzed relations between a wave form and timing of response, and the influence of the point variability. As a result, we found some tendencies to respond at a specific wave form (such as tops or bottoms of the wave). These tendencies differed among the participants, and also changed during the experimental session of each participant. We failed to find any evidence indicating the effect of point variability neither in response rates nor in answers of the questionnaire. These results indicate possibilities that some game elements unrelated to the win and loss may control player's response and probably attractiveness of the game. We are planning additional experiments investigating effects of other game elements, such as colors and sounds.
