In order to scan some of the hominoid fossils from early Late Miocene found in Tebingan area, central Myanmar, using the high-energy X-ray microtomographic scanning system in SPring8, a large synchrotron radiation facility located in Harima Science Park City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, I submitted a research proposal in response to the call for proposals for the term 2021B (the latter half of the fiscal year 2021). The proposal was accepted, and the scanning took place in October 2021.
Four specimens were scanned: a maxillary fragment (IR4400), two mandibular fragments (IR5800 and 5900), and a lower premolar (IR5700). The scanning was conducted at the beamline (BL) 28B2, a multi-purpose beamline using high energy white beam X-rays with 200 keV peak energy. Details of the scanning condition were 6.53 micron meter pixel, 3600 projections, 80 msec/image exposure time, covering 1.42 mm height per rotation, for three gnathic specimens, and 2.596 micron meter pixel and 40 msec/image exposure time for the premolar.
The resulted images were extremely clear and distinct compared to those obtained by an industrial CT system at National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo. Even the junction between enamel and dentine was discernible in some of the teeth. We plan to process these images 2-dimensionally as well as 3-dimensionally in order to further elucidate the morphological characteristics of these fossil specimens.
