Meteor. Clim. accepted)。
Aviation turbulence causes more than half of all major aviation accidents involving crew injuries. Once turbulence is encountered, extra fuel is consumed due to detours, etc., so it is necessary to predict the occurrence of turbulence in advance. However, although forecasting agencies and researchers in various countries have tried various methods, there is no system that can accurately predict the location and time of turbulence generation.
Currently, the most popular method in the world is to calculate an index for each grid point of weather forecast, and assume that turbulence will occur if the index is large. However, turbulence is a fluid phenomenon, and it is considered that it cannot be captured by information of only one grid point. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to construct a prediction system that learns meteorological variables such as wind around turbulence occurrence points as images.
With the support of this project, we compiled statistics on turbulence that occurred in Japan in the past based on reports by pilots (PIREP) (Miyamoto et al. 2023, J. Appl. Meteor. Clim. accepted). Furthermore, we clarified the seasonality of the background meteorological field that causes turbulence (Ito, Miyamoto, et al. in revision). From these studies, it was suggested that there is a characteristic background field when turbulence occurs, suggesting the possibility of prediction of the occurrence of turbulence from weather forecast data.
Using past turbulence data (PIREP) and meteorological reanalysis data (MANAL), a meteorological data set around the occurrence point was prepared. One data set was created for one turbulence case, and it was prepared for the number of turbulence samples. Next, we constructed a deep learning model, performed training and verification using the prepared data, and as a result, succeeded in demonstrating the possibility of predicting with the same accuracy as existing indices.
