- Wind tunnel tests were conducted to investigate the fundamental flutter characteristics of a tip-fin configuration wing. Two types of models were tested to provide experimental data for the flutter analysis of non-coplanar wings. One is a normally plain wing and the other has a cant angle of 15 deg at the tip-fin. They were tested in the 2 m x 2 m low-speed wind tunnel. On the tip-fin wing, mild flutter with limited amplitudes was observed in a certain range of speeds well below the typical violent flutter speed. It was caused by the coupling between wing torsions. and the deflection of the rotationally free rudder with mass balance. The effects of mass balance of the rudder located at the tip-fin were also studied to confirm its role in flutter prevention.
