A head-up display (HUD), which was designed by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) and manufactured for the NAL QSTOL (Quiet Short Take-Off and Landing) experimental aircraft, Asuka, also developed by NAL, was evaluated with the STOL flight simulator. The unprecedented feature of this HUD is that it provides the aircraft with the ability to perform in-flight approach and flare simulation. The flight simulator evaluation was conducted to verify functions of the six display modes: Basic, Normal, Velocity-Vector, Pseudo-approach-type-A (ILS deviation format), Pseudo-approach-type-B (flight-path error format), and Pseudo-approach-type-C (flight director format), and to obtain data for improving performance of the HUD. About 400 simulated approach-and-landing flights evaluated by four test pilots revealed that the HUD has significant effect in improving approach performance and reducing pilot workload, and that the HUD’s inflight approach function is satisfactory for the QSTOL. Also, suggestions to impro the display format of each display mode were obtained.
