一般注記An attempt was made to examine the strength and the relation between winding angle and fracture strength of filament wound circular cylindrical shells subjected to circumferential tension. By stress components analysis, the normal stress in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the fiber and the shear stresses along the fiber were determined in each layer. By relating these analytical stress components to the fundamental strength which corresponds to the three kinds of fracture mechanism that has been obtained on unidirectional fiber-reinforced composites, the circumferential tension strength was analytically predicted. The analytical results show that the fracture modes under circumferential tension of the helical winding cylinder is determined by following stresses in each winding angle; 1.Winding angle α=0°~30°, Normal tensile stress in the fiber direction, 2.Winding angle α=30°~70°, Maximum shear stress along the fiber direction. 3.Winding angle α=70°~90°, Tensile stress in the fiber direction. The fracture modes of the laminated helical-hoop winding, regardless of α, depends on the tensile stress in the fiber direction in the layer of the hoop winding. In comparison with high strength type reinforcing carbon fibers and high modulus type the former shows higher strength. Two different modes of filament winding were tested; helical winding and laminated helical-hoop winding. For each of these modes of winding, two different types of the test specimens were made; one of high strength type reinforcing carbon fibers and the other of high modulus type. The reinforcing fibers were embeded in the matrices of epoxy resin. The experimental results on the fracture strength and fracture modes agreed well with the analytical results.
