一般注記This paper presents the analysis and evaluation of a conical scanning earth sensor which detects the infrared (14-16μm, CO2 absorption bands) radiation of the earth. This type of sensor is widely used as a basic roll/pitch attitude reference for a three axis stabilized earth orbiting spacecraft. After describing the coordinate systems, some optical characteristics of the earth sensor are analyzed, with emphasis on geometric relations expressed in terms of spacecraft orbital parameters and attitude angles. The results are helpful in designing sensor parameters for some given missions and are also useful for obtaining a precise attitude estimation by data processing procedures, such as the statistical methods. Furthermore, sensor accuracy is limited by the fluctuation of the earth thermal horizon which is affected by many factors such as season and lattitude. Based on a simple earth radiation model, their influences on sensor accuracy are evaluated numerically. The results confirm that this type of sensor gives sufficient accuracy and a wide range of detectability for a certain class of earth orbiting spacecraft, and that sensor accuracy can be improved to some extent by parameter optimization or the use of a sophisticated signal processing algorithm.
