一般注記As the riding qualities of an aircraft are associated with a great number of factors (e.g.physical and psychological factors such as mechanical vibrations and environmental conditions), it is very difficult to find out the general solution for problems, such as what the mechanism of motion sickness is, how it can be alleviated and what the remedy for the symptoms is. The author believes that he succeeded in forming a thesis using various information and his own experimental studies, that establishes the fundamental concepts for analyzing the mechanism of dizziness discomfort and for dealing practically with the problems related to motion sickness susceptibilities. Considering the dynamic behaviour of aircrafts from the standpoint of the passenger’s riding comfort, the basic design of a vehicle made comfortable for the paying passenger can be established by verifying experimentally the so called sensory conflict concepts. This study is also the first step towards investigating the mechanism of space sickness exerienced to a large extent among astronauts in space orbital flights and mapping out a scheme of how to select astronauts and then execute their habituation training. The thesis can be summarized in the following three parts: (1)Introduction of Study This section will begin with the private experiences of the author. The proposed mechanisms of discomfort caused by various kinds of transport such as train, automobile, ship, aircraft and space ship were considered in the light of the physical features of two separate motion categories, the vibration and swing motion. Biophysical and psychophysical relations between the discomfort and the dynamic characteristics of vehicles were found to exist after considering the above mentioned motions. The discomfort due to vibration begins to occur with the sensing of the mechanical motion by the somatic sense organs. Vibration inputs applied to the human body stimulate the somatic sense organs, distributed in various parts of the human body, and generating the sensations of vibration. It can be deduced that resonance phenomena, which are produced in various parts of the human body (head, chest, abdomen, arms, legs, heart, eye-balls, etc.) are the cause of maximum discomfort due to vibration. A large number of papers relevant to vehicle ride comfort can be referred to, and the standard (ISO) of subjective discomfort levels under vibration exposure, that is the acceleration-frequency curve, is internationally accepted and presently being used for research and practical activities.
