In order to improve the driving algorithm of the moving base of a flight simulator, some basic characteristics concerning perception of roll motion were investigated. Thresholds of roll perception were examined by rolling subjects from an upright position and from several angles of initial tilt to upright. It was confirmed that the threshold of roll perception is represented by the roll angle in the range in which flight simulators are usually driven. The threshold of roll detection from an upright position was 0.78 deg. Those from a position of initial tilt increased in proportion to the angle of the initial tilt. Sensation of static tilt was also estimated by asking subjects to indicate the vertical direction. The tilt angle was perceived to be larger than the physical tilt in the range of less than 7 deg., while it was perceived to be smaller at larger angles.
