This paper describes the research and development status of a chemical propulsion system for satellites using ammonium dinitramide (ADN)-based energetic ionic liquids (EILs) as propellants. ADN-based EILs can be prepared only by mixing ADN with certain solid combustible materials and are expected to be a high-performance and safe propellant for small propulsion systems due to their features of low vapor pressure and high energy density. This year, we focused on obtaining combustion characteristics of thrusters and succeeded in achieving stable combustion at atmospheric pressure. We are aiming to achieve stable combustion under vacuum. We have also studied new technologies to extract the characteristics of EILs, such as a thruster system using a new ignition system, design of highly reactive ADN-based EILs, and low-cost continuous synthesis of ADN. We will clarify the feasibility of the thruster as a chemical propulsion system and also promote the application of each new technology to thrusters.
