The combination of monomethyl hydrazine (MMH) and nitrogen tetroxide (NTO) exhibits hypergolicity, meaning they immediately ignite upon contact. This combination is widely used as bipropellants for orbit control and attitude control thrusters in artificial satellites. The hypergolic reaction of MMH/NTO is a multiphase process involving liquid phase reactions, mass transfer between liquid and gas phases, and gas phase reactions. Although previous research has proposed the gas phase reaction mechanism through experimental and theoretical studies, limited research has been conducted on the liquid phase reaction mechanism due to the difficulty in analyzing the highspeed nature of these reactions. This report analyzed the liquid phase reaction of MMH/NTO based on quantum chemistry calculations. A detailed kinetic model of MMH/NTO in the liquid phase was constructed, and simulations of the liquid phase reaction were performed based on this model. The activation energies of the reactions between MMH and both N2O4 and NO2 in the liquid phase were lower than those in the corresponding gas phase reactions. Simulation results showed that the liquid phase temperature reached the boiling point of MMH at 0.15 μs, which was faster than the times observed in previous experimental studies.
