一般注記This dissertation consists of seven chapters, in the first chapter it introduces the most important research question being that of how the auxiliary verb have would have been understood by Margaret Cavendish, herself. The second chapter provides a historical overview of the 17th century England and Margaret Cavendish and her husband. The third chapter deals with both 17th century and modarn English grammar points. Chapter four offers a detailed discussion of the methodology, discussing its peculiarities as data driven research and its qualitative and quantitative aspects. Chapter five discusses the findings which set the ground for Chapter six, which is a discussion of what those findings might signify, arguing for a different interpretation of English grammar with regard to the 17th century than it is commonly assumed to be. The conclusion argues that what the research carried out was both original and that it has potential significance in providing a new approach to examining grammar in historical terms.
