- type:dataset[Abstract] Animals, as well as humans, are faced with choices in their daily lives. The accuracy of a decision largely depends on its speed: fast decisions tend to be error-prone, whereas accurate decisions tend to be relatively slow. The purpose of the present study was to explore this “speed-accuracy trade-off” (SAT) in pigeons, by using a visual-search task in which search difficulty varied from trial to trial. Two behavioral experiments were conducted to examine the relation between SAT and search difficulty. Results indicated that the pigeons adjusted there SAT flexibly and appropriately to maximize reward rate in accord with trial-by-trial changes in search difficulty. An evidence-accumulator model with the gate for the so-called urgency signals entering to accumulation to a single decision threshold was proposed. Data from individual pigeons are given in the attached files. The stimulus materials were created by Adobe Photoshop CS2 and commercially available morphing software (Morph, Gryhon). Experimental manipulations were controlled by computers (Dospara, Tokyo, Japan, Prime A Lighting M64), with the control program written in Microsoft Basic 6.0. Response time and accuracy were analyzed by Microsoft Excel 2021.
