students with poor academic records were recently asked to be in the three-party meeting with their parents and college professors. When asked about the lifestyle, those students who accepted the interview responded that they usually sit up late after midnight to fail to get up for breakfast, consequently skipping classes due to their significant delay of leaving home. The students themselves think that such lifestyle is undesirable, saying, “I don’t know what to do about it,” or “I want to get out of this ‘Hikikomori (stay-at-home)’ situation.” They say their bedtime and wake-up time are getting later year by year. Apart from breakfast time, as it differs family to family, questionnaire was carried out on the bedtime and wake-up time among sophomore students, collecting answers from 92 respondents. The survey was attempted to figure out the correlation between academic record and lifestyle. Among respondents, the large proportion of about 60 percent of students responded that they go to bed after midnight, which proves that the sleeping hours of such students are shorter than the “weekdays’ average sleeping hours of college and graduate students, that is, 7 hours and 38 minutes,” according to the result of the 2001 basic survey of social life, released by the Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
