The series Uncle Johns drolleries (including Dash's holiday) was advertised in McLoughlin Bros., Inc. publisher's catalogues between 1876 and at least 1886. The issue in hand is printed in a typeface (distinguished by curved serifs on lowercase a, c, and r) characteristic of that used by the McLoughlin Bros. for books issued in 1880s and 1890s. Apparently, the same typeface was used in a McLoughlin edition of the Children in the wood (Aunt Kate's series) , copyright 1884.
Cover included in pagination.
