- type:ThesisHistoric Japanese textiles from over 1000 years ago generally show marked deterioration and only very rare examples show their original forms without leaving enough information for the textile reproduction. The replication of textile braids lacks systematic methodology and is still being practiced only by few individual braiding experts. The diversity of cultural heritage is an irreplaceable knowledge not only for Japan but also for the world. The braid replicating techniques that recreate original braids as close as possible is an intangible cultural heritage. The aim of this study is to clarify the decision-making procedure of an expert, Makiko Tada, for replicating cultural property braids of scrolls. In Chapter 2, interviews and eye tracking analysis of the expert were performed during her working practices. Six principal braiding parameters including the number of transits and the balance of ridges were extracted for the replication works of braids, and it became clear that the orientation of multiple colored threads plays an important role for the parameter analysis. The expert’s replication works were also analyzed using a text-mining statistical technique to clarify the interrelationship of braiding parameters in Chapter 3. The relationships between each braiding parameter and production method such as loop manipulation and Taka-dai became clear. As a result, the process of deciphering the original braid structure has been compiled in simplified workflows. In Chapter 4, the effect of differences in the bobbin mass and the braided yarn angle of Taka-dai were investigated and statistically analyzed for the production of flat braids often attached to scrolls. It was established that the difference in the applied tension, at the braiding point during production, caused by the balance between the bobbin mass and the angle affected the appearance and the mechanical properties of the finished braids. Because the appearance and the physical properties affect not only the practical performance but also the ridge arrangement exposed on the braid surface, a balance between the choice of an appropriate bobbin mass and the braiding angle is important. Consequently, this research results are believed to contribute to the standardization and improvement in efficiency of replication of cultural property braids. It is also likely that useful knowledge was obtained for the subsequent replication of the braids of cultural property scrolls without relying on skilled workers.
