一般注記The mindfulness movement in the United States is a product of reinterpretations of yoga and Buddhism. The highlight of this movement is secular and scientific stress-reducing programs. Mindfulness programs are spreading rapidly in Japan. The purpose of this dissertation is to study the development and practice of mindfulness programs in Japan and identify the role of Japan’s sociocultural aspects in the acceptance and expansion of mindfulness programs. Based on the data collected from various sources and an extensive interview survey in Japan, it was identified that mindfulness was accepted in Japan because it is western, scientific, and secular. However, since Japan has a history of Buddhism, mindfulness instructors and Buddhist monks sometimes use Buddhist terminologies or cultural elements like tea ceremonies and Judo to explain mindfulness. I believe mindfulness will create an opportunity for Japan to rediscover its culture and roots. It will create an opportunity for Buddhist monks and mindfulness instructors to collaborate and develop sustainable programs that benefit society.
